I'm just curious how many of you had a dog when you were growing up... and how many became dog owners as adults.

I had a puppy when I was very little, when we lived in NC, but when we moved to MA we couldn't take it with us.. so, I never had the chance to grow up with a dog.

My hubby had a dog growing up which will make it easier, but it will be new territory for me! Any advice/stories to share?

Thanks

I had 4 dogs growing up (not all at the same time though) but still knew very little about training/raising a dog when I did finally get my very own first dog.

I kind of have a sweet story about me as a dog owner:
I had a dog when growing up until about high school), but I really wasn't the one that was "responsible" for him so it wasn't the same (it's always the parents, never the kids! LOL)... well, off to college and boys (hehe) and I guess I was too young and busy to really think about one. Well, then a few years ago I started feeling the "tug" in my heart to get a puppy! I had that puppy fever bad! But I was a home renter (not owner) and couldn't have one. You should have seen me whenever we saw any dog or puppy! hehe. Well, yrs later, the same day we bought our home was the same day I lost my grandmother. I really took the loss hard and had a tough time, until one day I was having a small break down and talkin to her in my car don't ask! hehe) and all of a sudden she told me "you can get a dog now that you are a home owner" and thus the real journey began! hehe....I was obsessed and looking everywhere (trips to the local shelter every other day! LOL) I always wanted a golden retriever (mainly because they are so wonderful with kids) - but wanted a puppy to grow up with the kids! Then ROAD BLOCKKKKKKK! We found out that I was ALLERGIC to dogs!!!! argh..... well, after lots of dr visits and research, we learned that some dogs have hair and some have fur! (did you know that?). It's the fur ones that people are allergic to (lots of shedding too), and not the dogs with hair! To end the story quickly, we finally found Bailey (who is part poodle, hence the HAIR) and I haven't had any problems with my allergies......(((achoooo)))

((OMG! I just re-read my post, and BOY DID I RAMBLE!! I'm sorry... hehehe! I guess I was a tad nostalgic today ))

Thanks Nern!

What a great story, Monster.. and, very sweet about your grandmother It's funny you should mention that hair vs. fur.. I actually just found that out recently! I never really understood why some dogs were good for allery sufferers, so I investigated. I am glad that you were able to get a pup and not have any troubles w/your allergies!!

we had a westie ever since i was born.. he died when i was ten and about 4-6 months later we got a lhasa apso.. she'll be 14 in july!
we always had pets though.. growing up i had plenty of fish, one rabbit, a total of 8 cats (the most at one time was 7), two cockatiels, 2 parakeets haha..
when i moved out on my own, and no longer in the dorm rooms, i just had to get a dog of my own..

I grew up with animals ,we always seem to have a dog ,horses ,a stray cat or two ,chickens ,geese .My sister had a pet pig until he got so huge .There was always some type animal around .A great Uncle had a monkey as a pet .So ,I was lucky in that we had exposure to animals .I always wanted a kitten or toy dog of my own ,but Dad would not go there ,but I have them now so I am satisfied .We lived in the boonies so we saw and still see all types animals on a regular basis .About 12 years ago a bear came up within about 50 feet of the house .I was amazed at her and her cub and you could hear the cub after that for a few weeks and then one day she had gone .Haven't seen them since but I wonder at her grit to come up so close to a house where I had at that time several largedogs ,but they never looked twice at her .There are fox, squirrel, deer ,rabbits ,snakes and other (both good and bad little creatures all over the place here .So ,guess even though I hate snakes I am kinda lucky to experience all the different wildlife .When I was young I didn't think about it ,but as I grew older ,I tend to just be amazed at all of them .

I had a number of dogs growing up (three cocker-spaniels and a lab). My wife and I just brought home our first puppy, Maddie - Maltese/Shih-Tzu two weeks ago! In fact, she just weighed in at 1.9 lbs at her 9 week checkup!

I've always had dogs growing up. I spend summers on a dairy farm so I had animal fever! When I moved to CA and lived in an apt. I had cats since I couldn't have dogs. As soon as we got a house it was back to dogs but we had our cat for 19 yrs and she was best friends with our Westie. We now have 2 dogs and a cat and they are best friends as well. I let my kids have pets and over the years we've pretty much had just about any animal one can keep in the city.
