Hi everyone!

I will be a new puppy owner of 2 shih poos in a couple of months and I have recently had people recommend obedience class.

Did you put your pup through obedience class? If so, why? If not, why?

I've always though that just hard work in training them would be enough....?

I welcome all thoughts =) Thank you in advance.

I would put your pups in the class. it could save theirs or your life one day.you could be walking them by a buisy street and drop the leash. If they are trained you could say come and they wouldn't get hit. see where i am going?

PooGirl13,

For me, I chose for Abbey to attend puppy classes, and it really helped with myself learing how to train her. I think I benefitted more than her in the long run. Maybe if you have time prior to getting your pups, as you seem to have, reading, watching videos and reading posts here on training issues, might be enough. Also be sure to check out the "all dogs" forum, as there is allot of great posters over there. And I do agree with you that, if you have enough determination and time, then home training can be just as good, maybe even better than classes.

Just my thoughts,

i have always home trained (family dogs and now my bella).. but this can only happen if you have the time and patience and of course some good reference material (i.e. good books)..
if you are a first time dog owner than you may want to read a lot or two classes.. i guess to each his own..
but if you really want to the training yourself there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to

PooGirl13~

ABSOLUTELY!!! I think you already know how I feel about this issue! LOL

Obedience/Training classes are beneficial in numerous ways:

1) Allows your dog (or shall I say dogs, ) to soialize with other dogs, which is of vital importance.

2) Training/Obedience classes are fun for dogs (granted if it is a good class).

3) You, the dog owner, will learn many valuable lessons in training and other aspects of dog ownership.

4) And probably one of the most important aspects would be exactly what dreamer_girl mentioned.

5) A well trained dog makes living with a dog tremendously easier than living with an untrained/out of control dog.

6) Obedience/Training classes are also great for improving the important bond between you and your pup!

These are only a few benefits out of many from attenting obedience/training classes.

So, find a high quality obedience class in your area and sign up! I can guarantee you that you won't regret doing so!!!

Kristi

I did obedience training w/my dog because I was a first time dog owner and wanted to try it. They only thing I really liked about it was that it was fun and my dog got to play and be around other dogs, which I did feel was helpful. I suppose it depends on who you go to, I went to petsmart and it really was not well organized and not one on one but it wasn't really expensive either. In this case I do believe you get what you pay for, its all about what you put in to it. I believe any dog can be trained it just takes patience and time. I went to training and my dog who was 7 pounds was the only dog that was not a lab, (therefor he was way smaller than the others) All in all I would consider it again I think........
