hi, i posted this message on the regular size dogs forum and then i realized i should have posted it here. i have a 2 months old pom male puppy, i sleep upstairs and i take him with me up there every night. he sleeps on his pillow on the floor but between 1 to 2 am he gets up and whines so bad and wants to go downstairs, i can not put him in a crate because he makes loud monkey like noises and wakes up everyone including my father who is ill.
i know you might say why did i get a puppy without searching and you are right but i have had a chihuahua puppy for the last 5 months he is 7 months old and he never barked or whined he was wonderful and i got the pom puppy as a playmate for him.
anyhow could you please give me some advice as to what to do to correct his barking and whining at night? thanks a lot, gil

is he always downstairs except for at night when you take him up stairs? if he is usually downstairs then that is where he feels safe.. he make wake up in the middle of the night confused and scared..
how long have you had him? usually a pup that young would of just been weaned from its mother, meaning if he woke up in the middle of the night she would be there for him and he could nuzzle/nurse from her..

also, it could possibly be nightmares waking him up.. do you know what his situation was before you brought him home?

hi, yes he is mostly downstairs during the day and at night he sleeps upstairs by my bed. he is 2 months old now. i got him from a breeder and i saw his mom and dad and they looked healthy.i have had him for 2 weeks now.
last night was an overkill again, he woke up and started whining and crying, i am thinking maybe i should return him or something because they can also hear him downstairs and they can't sleep.
so you think i should let him sleep downstairs? he slept in my moms room downstairs and got up in the middle of the night and wanted to go to the living room at 3 am!!!
but if there is anythingelse please let me know. thanks in advance: gil

Your dog is not use to sleeping without his/her's littermates yet. My Sadie (Toy Poodle) went through the same thing when she came home. The only thing that helped her was cuddling into me on the bed, then when she woke up I was there. If you really don't want them to sleep on the bed you can try putting a hot water bottle and a ticking clock covered up in their bed. It gives them the warm feeling of their littermates and sounds like a beating of a heart with the clock! It really worked well for my larger dog(Maya), but Sadie is just so small it doesnt bother me to have her on the bed.

I hope this helps!

PS. Your dog is still young and it just frightened, it has been taken away from everything that was familiar and place into unfamiliar territory, give them time to adjust, it will not happen over night.

Just wondering where you chihuahua sleeps. Maybe he wants to be with him, if so keep them together.

It is possible. Is it the chi that dislikes the pom or vice versa. If the pom likes him then that could be it. He just wants to be close to another dog. Maybe it makes him feel comfortable to be around another dog. At least at night. Being in a new place. Try it out. Though if they have bad fights, I would not advise to do so. I would try staying down there with them a few nights to make sure chi does not hurt pom.

puttin has a good idea.. but make sure you have a couch or floor to sleep down there (or somewhere close enough that if a fight breaks out you will awaken and stop it) the first couple of nights.. he is still young and probably misses his littermates and mother..
