is there a method for keeping this fur clean, or does it inevitably get food stained?? or is it the minerals in the water, will a water filter help??

Hi scrappy,

One of my shih-poos Tigger has staining, but it is not around his mouth, rather his eyes. I have been told that having filtered water does help. Altough, despite the fact that we have filtered water, Tigger still has the tear stains. It wouldn't hurt to give it a try though, it may work better for you than it did for me.

My groomer said that staining on a a white faced dog is almost inevitable, although there are products out there that can help. Most products won't get rid of the color, they just make the color less obvious by fading it. For the eye tear stains on Tigger I just trim underneath his eyes to get rid of the color inbetween grooming appts. I know there are products out there that aid in getting rid of some of the stained color on a dog's face, but I have not used any myself so I am unsure of a particular product that works well. I plan on just sticking with the trimming.

Maybe someone here on the board has a special technique that they will share!

Sorry I couldn't be of more help,
Kristi

scrappy~

Huh, that's an interesting story about the maltese!

Let me know what you find out if you e-mail a show breeder, it would be interesting to hear!

Thanks,
Kristi

I've just read today that making sure there is no food coloring or dyes in your dogs food is supposed to be helpful.

There are "tear staing removaling" products you can buy to remove stains on the beard and eyes for white dogs. I find that only the ones you can buy at an actual loca supply store work, nothing from a chain store.
there are also a lot of whitening shampoos on the market. I use "snow white whitener" (for horses) on 2 of my white showdogs i just dilute more than usual and it works wonders.
