Okay, shihpoo owners, help. I have a shihpoo and he is about 4 mos. old. He is also getting the matts in his hair on his butt and on his legs. I bought a slicker brush that the vet recommended. When I comb him it hurts him and pulls his hair out. I guess I need to do the conditioner thing too like Michelle. He has been scratching alot. I guess his skin is dry. Nonetheless, he is going to the groomer for his first grooming visit with her in a few weeks. I'm curious how other shihpoo owners have their dogs' hair cut? I think I like the shaggy, shitzu look. Any info? Thanks.

Hi daearly,

I have two shih-poos, so I may be able to help you out. I have found that I HAVE to brush my two shih-poos almost every other day to keep their coats nice looking. One of them, Mickey, has a little more of a curly coat, so his hair is a little harder to deal with. Since I do brush them just about every other day, I have yet to find any matts (thank goodness ). I also bring them to my groomer's home every six weeks for a trim around the face, in the ears, "rear end," and their underside. Right now they have the long hair/coat, but next time they go to my groomer I am going to have her take about and inch, or maybe a little more, off their coat. That will make the brushing and upkeep MUCH easier for me! Their long coat is just too much to keep up with when it comes to brushing! I have seen several shih-poss with short haircuts, and they are VERY cute!!!

For you I would definitely recommend buying a dog specific de-tangler. I know a couple of people who use them on their dogs and they say it works wonderfully. If the matts are becoming a problem I would most assuredly go to a groomer soon so they do not become an even bigger problem. Matts in a dog's coat have the potential to become a significant problem, sometimes leading to a dog needing to be shaved.

For the dryness, I would use an oatmeal and aloe shampoo & conditioner every time you bathe your dog. And be sure not to bathe your dog too often or to use a "human hairdryer" on him, as they both lead to further drying of the skin.

Hope this helped,
Kristi

Thank you so much for your reply!! I appreciate all of the help I can get, especially from someone who is experienced with shihpoos. I can't wait to take Brodie to the groomer and see how he looks. Where do you buy the oatmeal and aloe shampoo and conditioner? Is it for dogs? I have been blow drying him with my hairdryer. What other way do you suggest? Towel drying? Thanks so much for your help.

I think the only way to get the matts out without freaking him out and scaring him away from grroming altogether is cut the mats out. Buy more than one slicker brush and keep one next to your bed. At night or in the morning whichever is best, give him a good brushing. Trying to brush out matts will only hurt him. Cut them out. Use the conditioner to make brushing easier while its wet. Always brush him before his bath too. Make sure to brush daily to avoid this in the future.

!!!!!PICTURES PLEASE!!!!!

I want to see!!!! I want to see how others are keeping their Shihpoos groomed. Daearly, I'd especially love to see your 4 month old Shihpoo!

I have a 3 month old Shihpoo. I don't have many options at this point. I'd love to have her long and flowing with the little bow on the top of the head like the typical ShihTzu. My sons are completely against this. (lol) They think we should keep her short and sassy. I brush her several times a day (it's part of our cuddle time). I bath her once a week with Johnson's baby shampoo. This is what she was being washed with by her "breeder" (termed loosely). She has the most beautiful shinny black coat. (If I do say so myself) But she does scratch a lot. I think I will give the oatmeal/aloe shampoo a try. I do use a human blow dryer on her as well. I've been adamant about getting her completely dry. I guess this is bad for the dry skin? =/ (Oopsie) I didn't know this. But, I do know that it was extremely important to keep her from getting a chill when she was very young. (I've had her since she was 3 almost 4 weeks old) Is it still as important to keep them from a chill at 3 months? How can I get her completely dry? Also, the hair around her eyes is getting so long I can't see her eyes anymore but, it is not long enough to draw back onto her head and out of her eyes. Any suggestions or advice?

Precious's Mommy,
Sunday

3-4 weeks?? who in the heck would let a pup leave its momma at 3-4 weeks!! A puppy should NEVER and I mean NEVER leave its momma before 6-8 weeks of age.
Your extremely lucky she doesn't have any health issues. I'm appaled that your "breeder" allowed such a thing.

As for the matting problem..I've found that leaving a little bit of conditioner in a dogs hair will keep this from occuring.
My mother has a great pyraneses, and he is an all outdoor giant. So this problem arises all the time.

Samsintentions,
I would agree with you! You obviously haven't read any of my previous posts. I explained in a later post the extenuating circumstances in which I got my Precious. You really should do your homework before bashing on people. You know your hostility towards me is really not necessary (which includes other topics).

NOT THAT THIS HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THIS TOPIC BUT:
I feel I need to defend/explain myself here. I got my dog from a relative of a neighbor who is so, NOT a breeder. Don't know any other term to use when trying to keep it short in a post, so I used the most common, known term "Breeder" and put in the disclaimer. I would have NEVER taken Precious a day before 8 weeks. I too was appalled! This was NOT the original plan, but what could I do? I was told to take her or leave her. If I had not taken her she would have been sold to someone/anyone else. I also took in Precious's brother for 5 weeks to keep the young pups together until they were 8 weeks old. For 4 weeks I got up every 3 hours and hand feed two puppies. I went through great lengths to give them all the love, patients and care they required. It was not easy! I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS! But this was a task I gladly took on under the circumstance. And, I am not completely sure that there are no health problems. She has been to our vet 3 times and so far she has a clean bill of health but she is only 3 months old and she does have this little snort that we are keeping our eyes on.

I'm very sorry to get off topic like this guys! I hope you understand? I also hope that there is no further need to defend myself.

I'd still love to see pictures!

To answer your questions about bathing/drying Precious:

1)For some dogs, bathing once a week drys out their skin. For my two shih-poos, I bathe them every 2-3 weeks.

2)Using a "human shampoo" is really not a good idea. I did explain in another topic on this forum why using "human shampoos (and conditioners)" is not a good idea. Here is what I wrote:
"I wouldn't exactly recommend using any "human shampoos" (nor conditioners) on dogs. Reason being because the pH in human shampoos (& conditioners) is quite different from that of the pH in dog shampoos. Simply speaking, the pH in human shampoos is incompatible for any dog's skin type. There are many other differences between a dog's skin type and that of a humans (ex. thickness, acidic levels, etc.) and each of those important factors are closely kept in mind when formulas are developed for dog and human shampoos.
Use of a human shampoo on a dog can result in mild to severe irritation to a dog's skin as well as other skin problems. Some dogs do not have problems with the use of human shampoos, but the best bet is to stick with shampoos and conditioners that are strictly made for dogs. Tearless shampoos & conditioners (for dogs) are also a plus for your dog's sake!

Most vets, groomers, and online information will advise you to stay away from human shampoos and conditioners and opt for shampoos and conditioners designed precisely for dogs.

Bottom line, stick with dog specific shampoos and conditioners for the safety of your dog!!!"

3)Yes, using a "human hairdryer" does contribute to the drying of dogs skin. This is due to the heat. What I do with my shih-poos. Bathe them, dry them the BEST that I can with a towel (which usually drys them about half way), use a hairdryer (dog specific is best) to dry them the rest of the way. I never let them outside (since it is very cold here in the Midwest during the winters) until they are COMPLETELY dry. To prevent them from having to go to the bathroom soon after the bath, I take them outside RIGHT BEFORE their bath! Any dog will be a bit chilly soon after getting done with their bath, but as long as you keep them indoors (while wet) and dry them pretty well they should be fine.

4) For the trimming around the eyes. I would suggest finding a good groomer and making an appt. If you look under her paws, you will probably notice hair growing between the pads of her feet, that should be trimmed down. Her nails should be trimmed. Some dogs (my shih-poos do) have hair in their ears that need to be cut. Around the face should be trimmed. There are a couple of other areas that should also be trimmed down as well. So, you may want to do some research and find a good groomer and talk with them about it, they should be able to help you out a lot and trim all the areas that need trimming.

Best of Luck with it all!!!

daearly~

The oatmeal & aloe shampoo is made specifically for dogs, and it really works well! The brand I use is Earthbath oatmeal & aloe shampoo and conditioner. It can be found at most pet supply stores. My groomer HIGHLY recommended that brand and kind, so I gave it a try and am very happy with it!

For drying, towel dry your pup as best as you possibly can, then I would suggest using a dog hairdryer on him/her for the rest of the drying.

Best of luck to you as well!!!

*As puttin510 said: Brushing a dog before the bath, and after the bath when wet (using a conditioner is REALLY helps) is great advice!!! And yes, brushing is VERY important to prevent matting problems!!!

Sincerely,
Kristi

Thanks for the info. about the oatmeal bath. I will definitely switch to that and start towel drying Brodie. I'm sure he will like that much better too. I have started brushing him more often and it really helps. Thanks again for all of the advice!

Sunday ~ I'm not bashing you, nor anyone else. I did not see your previous posts. I made the generalized statements, that its unhealthy to let apup go before 6 wks....

There are circumstanses that this does have to happen, and the pups are lucky someonelike you cared enough to take on the grouling task of caring for them at such a young age.

I'm sorry if I offended you.
As for another post, I constantly see people wanting to breed their dogs, "for the fun of it" or "too see what they would look like".

Its not the greatest idea. I would never breed one of my dogs unless, all pups have a permanant and confirmed home before the breeding takes place. My dogs are workers, they bring in cattle, sheep, police dogs, and drug dogs. One or two go for family dogs that won't make the cut for a work dog.

It conserns me that people do all this breeding, becaus I have at least 10 dogs dumped at my front yard monthly.
I take them all in, have them vet checked, and feed them until they are healthy, medicate, whatever I have todo, then find them homes.
It saddens me that people do this. But I'm also content that they know they can leave them with me, instead of dumping them in a harmful or dangerous place.

Everyone is intitled to their own oppinions, i just voiced mine. I'm sorry if it offended you. I'm just a concerned animal lover, that wants everyone to know the pro's and con's of puppy hood, life, and everything else.

Your puppy is gorgeous. And definately fits her name Precious.

I too would love to see phtos of everyones "fur kids"

Samsintentions, Apology humbly excepted. I'm sorry for getting a little defensive there. I found your post confrontational because you had question marks in your opening declarative sentence and exclamation points at the end of a interrogative sentence. (I'm a home schooling Mom can you tell?) What that all means is, You asked a question and therefore, I replied. No harm, no fowl. It sounds like you are a very kind and animal loving person. It is very knobble of you to take in all those pets. I can see how you could get passionate about the breeding topic when you have seen many abused and neglected animals. These animals where never suppose to be dropped off in your yard. These animals should have been someone's loving companion. It is a travesty. I assure you, I would never breed my dog for "the fun of it". I think I was very clear about that in another post on that topic. And, let me state again, I do not recommend ever voluntarily taking a baby away from it's mom before it is 8 weeks old. It is not healthy for the dog, physically, emotionally and developmentally. I only hope that keeping her with her den mate helped. I think it has. She is the best little dog! Thank you for the compliment of Precious. Of course, I sure think she is gorgeous.

Precious's Mommy,
Sunday

You are more than welcome for the info. Hopefully the oatmeal & aloe shampoo and conditioner will help to alleviate some of Brodie's dry skin. Some dogs' dry skin though is more of a serious issue that requires "special" shampoos and conditioners from your vet. For most dogs, an oatmeal & aloe shampoo found in pet stores usually does the trick if the dry skin is not a serious issue. I (along with my groomer) use Earthbath and have been really happy with it and the results that it brings after use!

Let me know how you (and Brodie ) like the oatmeal & aloe shampoo & conditioner!

Kristi

I take my Shihpoo to the groomer's every 6 weeks and have her trimmed down to about half an inch over her whole body, except for her nose/face area which I get shaved down because she has a big problem with "tearing" gunk that gets stuck in the fur around her eyes. I leave the fur on the dome of her head a little big longer (but not much!) so that her head has a fuller look.

Alison~

Do you possibly have any pics. of you shih-poo with the haircut? I will be bringing my two shih-poos in soon to have their coat cut back (it is currently long & un-cut), and I am interested in seeing what this cut looks like on other shih-poos! I have seen a few shih-poos with the a short haircut, but not that many, so I am always looking for pictures to give me a better idea of what it might look like.

Thanks,
Kristi

Hello everyone! I was doing some research on the net about my dog's breed (ShiPoo) and came across this message board. (Isn't that how it always happens?) It seems as if most of you have the same "problems" (that's in quotes, so don't get all crazy thinking I have problems... hehe) with ShiPoo grooming concerns as I do (as far as grooming). I have an 8 month old, Bailey (Bailey, meet the people, people meet Bailey... hehe) and he goes to the groomers about every 3 1/2 - 4 wks and I have her scissor cut him and just do a "Hygiene cut" - this is where she will shave around the eyes, cut his skirt, legs, paws, inside ears, hiney, etc.. He doesn't have a real long coat - but it's very "fluffy". The groomer visits are great, but truly only last about two weeks before he starts matting again (UGH!) He just started that w/in the last month. I have to comb and brush him EVERY DAY (the groomer recommended a comb and that works soooo much better). But I STILL have to cut the occasional mat out.... argh! It's never ending, I think, but I realllyyyyy don't want to have to cut him short. It's definitely a dilemma. I'm still torn on how he'd look with a shorter cut.... but I'm also willing to put vanity aside so that he's happy.
OH! and about the shampoo.... I also use Earthbath (Puppy) Shampoo and I LOVE IT! It's very gentle and when we accidentally get in the eyes, it doesn't seem to bother him (((PHEW))) He hasn't had any problems with dry skin either, so I'm wondering if it's cuz I use this brand. Hmmm..

Hi There MonsterBailey~

WELCOME to this board!!! Feel free to come back whenever you please, and add any comments or questions you may have. I hope that you too will find this board as helpful as I, and many others here, have found it too be. (It is also rather addicting, lol, so beware!)

I too have a shih-poo (2 actually), and just love them to pieces. I can definitely relate to you about the grooming. Fortunately though, I have had no problem with matting when it comes to my two shih-poos (Phew)! But, I do brush them every other day, and sometimes every day depending on how they look. For the brushing I do use the slicker brushes which I personally have found to work best on Mickey & Tigger (the shih-poos). Their actual coat has never been cut besides just the "usual trimming" (i.e. paws, face, underside, rear end, etc.) Therefore they still have the long coat. Although, next time I bring them in for their usual 6-8 wk. grooming appointment, I am going to have my groomer trim down their coat to give them a shorter haircut.

*It is also very important to REALLY brush the dog. Sometimes people just do a quick brush, not really getting down to the base of the coat and brushing it all out. That of course leads to matting problems. Most people who do that, just don't know any better, and they are confused as to why the matting occurs, so I always make sure that people are thoroughly brushing their dog. This probably isn't the case for you, but I just thought I would mention it anyway.

In regards to the Earthbath. It is great to hear that you too have found the brand to work WONDERFULLY! (For Mickey and Tigger I use Earthbath Oatmeal & Aloe) My groomer actually uses it on all the dogs that she sees (including her own), and she recommended to me that I give a try. Well, I did, and I couln't be happier with it. So, EVERY dog owner that I know, or meet, I always recommend Earthbath to them. Everyone who I know that uses it, absolutely LOVES it!!!

Again, welcome to you (& your monster of a shih-poo, Bailey )!!!

All the Best,
Kristi

Hiya Kristi... thanks for the info. I definitely make sure that I brush him down to the skin and don't just "smooth over" his coat. We learned that fairly early on hehe.... However, I do have a question regarding the "slicker brushes". I'm not sure what you mean by that. Is that a brand, or are you describing them? I don't mean to sound stupid, but I'm really not sure what you mean, and I'm curious about them (especially if they work better! hehe). Can you get them at the stores, like "PetsMart"?I will say that the comb works the best - even though Bailey isn't too fond of them Oh, and how old are your ShihPoos?

Hi again MonsterBailey~

Glad I was able to help! I have no problem with you asking what a slicker brush is, I am more than glad to explain! (Please don't ever hesitate to ask questions!!!) A slicker brush is an actual type of dog brush. To give you an idea of what they look like, click on this link below, and there you will see a picture of what a slicker brush looks like: http://www.petsmart.com/dog/shopping/grooming%5Fessentials/brushes/products/p roduct%5F19444.shtml Although you can't see REALLY well what it looks like, at least you can get an idea. That brush in the picture is the EXACT brush that I use on Mickey & Tigger. I actually bought it at PetsMart, so yes you should be able to find it at your local PetsMart.

I do have a comb for Mickey & Tigger, but I have actually found the brush to work much better. But, every dog is different! So, if the combs seems to work better on Bailey, by all means, continue using it. If you haven't given a slicker brush a try, I would definitely recommend trying one!

It is GREAT to hear that you ARE brushing him down to the base! Some people don't do so because they honestly don't know that they HAVE to, so I always like to mention it just in case, so their dog doesn't end up with terrible matts.

Let me know what type of brush (or comb) you find to work best on Bailey!

Take Care,
Kristi

Thank you Kristi! I was actually hoping you'd send a link so I could see what one looked like! and, I have seen those at Petsmart.... I think I'll try one! So far the comb works pretty good (that and a hidden pair of scissors now and again...hehe). Bailey is going to the groomers tomorrow morning and I am going to ask her to cut him short(er) ... wish us luck! I hope I don't regret that Luckily we live in California and I won't have to worry about him freezin his hiney off
