hi everyone, i recently got a tiny toy pomeranian for christmas. She is great.
But there is one little problem with her. She loves to bite!no matter what i do she still bites, she is only 7 weeks old so she's teething, but i need some way to show her that biting is wrong. Please help, and also if anyone knows anything about pomeranians. What is the average size of a tiny toy pomeranian? thanks in advance.

Well this is what I did for my Teething puppies, I took a washcloth and wet it. Ring it out real good and freeze it rolled up. I'd give it to the puppies when they were teething to help soothe their gums. Plus it keeps them occupied for a few hours ;O) Good luck with the biting it could just be the new teeth coming in she's still a baby. My Yorkie was having a bitefest this weekend. I think he was overwhelmed with all the company because he never ever has biten anyone.

Mallory,
I didnt know there was a tiny toy pom. I have two adult females one wieghs 4.5 lbs the other a little closer to 6. They are tiny girls, their parents were both a little bigger than that, I believe their father was around ten lbs.

My pom is now 5 months old and she is still biting alot. I try telling her no and even giving her timeouts for this but it is like she is out of control at times.

What should I do other than things I have already tried?

Will she grow out of this as she gets older??

There is a difference between biting out of aggression and biting due to teething. In either scenario, the biting behavior does need to be stopped. But, each scenario should be treated differently.

To explain:

When your dog bites you out of aggression, let out a loud, high-pitched yelp, walk away, and COMPLETELY ignore him/her. Yelping when your dog bites you mimics the exact nature of what dogs do when bit too hard by another dog (or gets hurt). This lets your dog know in his/her "language" that the bite hurt and was unacceptable. Walking away from the dog and completely ignoring him/her takes away what is so important to every dog, and that is attention. Some dogs catch on very quickly, while others take a little longer, but this method is very effective!

When your dog is sitting by you and starts "nibbling" at your hand, in a firm voice say "no" and hand him/her a chew, bone, etc. This requires that you always have a chew, bone, etc. near by so you can immediately replace your hand with some kind of chew for your dog. If your dog keeps going for your hand, even with the chew that you gave him right in front of him, that is when you need to start using the yelp, walk away, and ignore technique.

*Important: When you see your dog chewing on appropriate items, be sure to reward him!

As I always say, patience and persistence is VERY important when dealing with your dog!!!

Good Luck,
Kristi

Michelle, my pom is the same way. its like after she wakes up from a nap she goes completely crazy. She chases your feet and bites anything she can get ahold of. Im hoping that sh does grow out of it and i think that im going to try the rolled up washclothe. maybe that will help. what i do when she bites though is i make my hand completely flat when she has discovered one of my fingers and i say no! and tell her to give kisses and somtimes, depending on if she hasnt gotten to crazy yet she'll start licking me hand. but im trying anything right now.

Really? I felt like I was the only owner of a pom that acted like this. Sometimes she is really good and I know she could be a good dog if she would just stop biting so much. I have taught her to sit and stay.. but that doesn't always work either. haha.

I think I will try that rolled up towel thing also. Maybe they are just going through biting stages because of being a puppy. I have never had to deal with a puppy that was so much involved. I love her, but I jsut want her to be more of a lap dog and not so hiper. Maybe as she gets older.

Do you work all day and keep yours in a crate? I keep Tippy in her crate while I am gone.. but my husband comes home for an hour at lunch and lets her outside. She seems to not mind it... I think she sleeps alot. but I feel bad always keeping her in there all day.

Michelle, same here, i wish rylee was more of a lapdog too. but someone told me that pomeranians are atleast 2 yrs old before they become lapdogs. right now i keep rylee in the laundry room with a gate at the door. She has a crate in the room with her so that when she gets tired she can go in and sleep. I was afraid of keeping her in the crate all day because i dont want her to end up hating the crate and not wanting to be in it, but today im going to get her a dog bed so that she can sleep in my room at night instead of the laundry room so that way she wont be in there all day and night. I would let her sleep with me but shes still a puppy and very small so im scared too. shes also a great dog but i just think shes going through her teething stage, biting anything she can get ahold of. im hoping she'll grow out of it. but until then im trying my hardest to train her not to bite......

Mallory,

What are you doing to train her not to bite? I was also told that lack of socialization does that to them too. But she gets alot of love and attention from me and my husband so I am not sure what it is. I keep blaming it on a puppy stage. I think you are right, I think putting them in a small room with the crate in it and a place to run would be nice. I think I will try that with Tippy. She has been in the crate ever since we got her. We don't put her in there unless we are asleep at night or while we are gone... but I would rather have a place she can run alittle and not be stuck in there all day. I try on the weekends to let her have alot of freedom since the week is like that. She goes under the bed when she gets tired and ready for a nap. haha.

Is your dog potty trained? Tippy goes to the backdoor but she still has a few accidents now and then.. so I am trying to stay on top of her alittle more.

Thanks for telling me about that.

Feel free to write back.. I am really enjoying talking to you!

Michelle,

Rylee is doing alot better. Ive been working with her alot lately and her biting is getting better, she knows what "no" means and the tone of voice its used in. When she bites my hand or ne thing i just tell her "no" and to "give kisses" and then she starts licking. I am so happy, i taught her to sit, stay, and come. She has the sitting thing down but we're still working on the others. uumm....the whole house-breaking thing is complicated. what did you do to house-break tippy? right now with rylee we have those little puppy pads and i keep one by the back door. I take her out as much as possible and when i do i say rylee lets go poddy and then she follows me to the back door and i tell her to sit and then i put her leash on and take her out. then while we're out there i repeatedly tell her to go poddy and then congratulate her when she does and im hoping she'll start to piece the whole thing together and go to the back door when she needs to poddy. But other then that she's doing great! i love her! i think im gonna take her to the groomer and have her trimmed and then a little bow put on yop of her head. hehehe! but ne ways please write back, i really enjoy talking to you too.

Mallory,

Sorry it took me so long to reply, I just got your message today. sounds like Rylee is coming along great! How did you teach him to come? I can't seem to get Tippy to understand that one. She sits and lays down but gets the two confused sometimes. haha.

I have not lease trained her yet, but I know she needs it. I trained her with the crate. She loved it so much that that was the easiest way for me! She seems to love the crate.

Tell me how you teach her to come? I am not sure what to do on that one.

Thanks! Write soon! I feel like I am making a freind here.! haha.

Do you live in American? If you don't mind me asking??

Im not exactly sure how i taught her to come. She's extremely smart and catches on to things really fast. uumm...i taught her to sit, and then stay and then while she was staying i bent down and said rylee come here and she did. rylee's actually doing really good on her leash, when it was warm out i took her for her first walk and she did great. whenever i go to the pet store i take her with me and she walked on her leash there too. she just follows along and when she gets into something i just say her name and she catches up. How did you teach tippy to lay down? rylee just isnt catching on to that one. but other than that and a few accidents on the floor, shes doin great, if only i could get her to stop barking so much. yea, i live in america. I live in Kentucky. i feel like im making a friend too, i really enjoy our pom talks, hahaha.

Try thumping her nose. If that doesn't work try giving her a pop on the bottom jaw. It worked for my dog.

Mallory,

I need to lease train Tippy. I just have been so busy with work that I haven't had time. Did you buy a collar bigger than her neck so she can grow into it? I mean he! ha

I just taught her how to sit first and then laydown.. she sometimes gets it confused though.. I might have taught her too much at once.
