I have an 11 month old toy poodle that I have trained to sleep in her crate. In the past few months depending on my mood I will let her sleep in my bed. I really want to get her used to sleeping on my bedroom floor and get her a new bed for my room. But if she is not in her crate she will jump up on the bed. I dont want to crate her at night because she is well trained to sleep through the night. Any suggestions on what I can do?

Just persisitance. After nearly three years of letting my terrier mix sleep on my bed I had changed my room around and decided no more shedding dog on my bed. With him it only took about 4 days of telling him a couple of times a night to go to his own bed, That was it. His bed is right next to ours and he no longer has to avoid our feet. He seems to enjoy his own space. He also has a bed in the livingroom. They have thermal doggie bed warmers. Maybe getting one of those will help keep her in her spot. Can you post any updated pics of Angel.

Hi nessa1880,

Well, first of all, there is one slight problem. Problem: you let her sleep in your bed in the past. So, she is probably quite confused as to why all of a sudden she can't do that. But, lucky for you, you do have the power to change the situation to your liking. Needless to say, it will require time though.

The only suggestion I have for you would be to purchase a "puppy playpen" (sometimes called an "exercise pen"). All of them come in a variety of dimensions and are made out of a variety of materials. Most them can also be easily configured into any shape you desire; such as a circle, square, etc. Some of them do come with covers, but I prefer them without the cover/top (although, due to some dogs' amazing jumping capability, I do see why one might need one ).

I bought a 4 x 4 (feet) metal one several months back for outside, but it is now being used in our house as a gate since we no longer needed it outside. Personally speaking, they are quite nice and can be used for a variety of situations.

Other than this, I am not sure exactly how you could keep her off your bed and on the floor. Good luck, and hopefully she will catch on quickly!!!

Best Regards,
Kristi

One more thing: If you are interested in seeing what a "puppy play pen" looks like, simply go to a search engine online and type in puppy play pen. Many websites that sell pet supplies have pictures of what they look like.

I have a question for someone. What if I want her to sleep with me on the bed? SHe loves her crate even though I have to put her init.. she won't go in it by herself at night. I find her under the bed .. she doesn't seem to want to sleep with me. How do I teach her to sleep with me?

The only time my girl goes under the bed is when its hot or she is not feeling well. If you do get your dog to sleep on your bed make sure she has an easy way to get up and down. Try not to let her jump up and down. Very bad for the joints. Put a sturdy stool next to the bed.

Well.. She is a healthy girl.. so i am not sure why she likes to sleep under the bed.. maybe becuase it is quiet under there and dark. She loves to be on the bed but can't seem to get her to want to sleep there.. maybe as she gets older. I am thinking it is becuase we have gotten her crate trained and she enjoys a safe little place she can go into.

Bailey sleeps under the bed a lot. If he's not under it, he's ON IT! We have a sleigh bed, so there is plenty of head room for him. It used to bother me, but we've gotten used to it now.... (I have/had visions of the bed falling through in the middle of the night or something! eeek). He's not sick or cold.... I think it's the 'close quarters' and the "my own space" issue.

What is a sleigh bed? I would really like to buy Tippy a bed, but have no clue what kind she would like. Cna you tell me what they look like and where I can get one? I found several at petsmart, but not sure what she likes.

Michelle,
I'm sorry I wasn't very clear in my response. The sleigh bed is what we, mommy and daddy, sleep in (not a dog's bed)... it's one of those beds where the headboard, footboard and sideboards are all one piece and it's higher up from the ground. I only mentioned the type of bed because of how much room it has "under" it.

But, I'll tell you, we've gone through several beds for our dog, Bailey (for daytime and downstairs) and after several attempts, we settled on one that we got at Petsmart. Bailey likes the beds that are very plush and mushy -- and 'contour' to his body when he gets in it. If your dog is the same way... I recommend the one at petsmart that is in the shape of a dog - it's more of a pillow type, but it still gives him that nesting feeling. After buying three different beds, this is his favorite. Gosh, dogs are so spoiled He also has a snuggle one at his grandma's.... it's on their website: http://www.petsmart.com/dog/shopping/beds/pillows/products/product%5F547.shtml

Oh ok! ha.. sorry. Thank you for telling me what kind of bed to get. I have been struggling with that for a while now. I will get one of those kind.. they look like something Tippy would love. Is it the kind that has a little pillow in the center to take out? Do you know if they are washable?

Please reply soon.

it's machine washable (the whole thing), but there isn't "center" to take out.... although the one we have at home that is in the shape of the dog has just a cover that you take off and wash (very easy!)

I like to keep her beds and things clean.. so thanks!I am going to get her one at petsmart. I appreciate that! She seems like the type to want to snuggle up to something.
