Looks as though Riley, who is 5 months old, does not like manufactured dog food, and I have spent a fortune trying this, and he seems to prefer food that I prepare for him.

My question basically is what are all the nutrients I need to provide for Riley with a homecooked diet. I have found recipes on line, but its hard to know which ones to use that will provide all the vitamins etc. Does anyone use supplements?

I have checked the section on feeding also.

Many thanks.

There is a book called "Home Prepared Dog & Cat Diets" by Donald Stombeck that you might be interested in.

also another book that is very helpful is Dr. Pitcarins natural guide to health and healing for dogs and cats.
He breaks down everything for you! To how much protein and vitamins your dogs need and how to supplement the food so they are getting everything they need.
It also gives recipes and a ton of other information.

I feed raw food
completely raw. i also use suppliments such as Vit. C (with is also found in the shells of Eggs) and atlantic Slamon oil. these things can all be found at a animal supply store, but not the national chains like, petland, or petecetera. Ask you vet or a clerk at the store.

Home prepared food is always beter, that way you know EXACTLY whats going into your dog.

What do you feeds them raw ? Meat ? veggies?
My brother gives his some raw as a treat but I can't bring myself to do that .Guess I am squeamish cause I wouldn't eat it raw (except for veggies)
I am not being mean ,just want to know why raw and what you feed them .I just don't think I could .

I feed jsut about anything. In Canda (and mabye the states) its called the BARF diet (Bones And Raw Food)
i feed raw minced chicken (they store minces the chicken for us)
chicken hearts rice ground veggies, sardines,
minced beef yoghurt
all the meat has bone fragment in it just about anything i eat the can- only i dont cook theres
and they get raw bones
dogs on a raw diet extend their lives by up to 3 years becasue of better dental condition. bad teeth leads to liver disease.

just think of it this way- When dogs were wild aniamls did they have a factory to walk up to twice daily and have a nice snack on some dry kibble-?
i know your not trying to be rude, its okay im happy to try and answer any questions you may have.
