Hello,

I'm planning on getting a peekapoo puppy.

Can anyone suggest any specific books out there that are good to read for someone who wants to litterbox train their dog and just for general training (i.e. crate training).

Also, do you have any suggestions on what questions one should ask a breeder they plan to buy from? And what sorts of things to watch out for? Are having papers on the puppy important?

I've only owned 1 dog in my life and am planning on getting another so I want to make sure I get a healthy puppy, have everything ready for her and know what to expect from her BEFORE I get her.

Thank you.

Having papers (if that means registration ) on a first or second generation poo cross or other cross is not important unless you intend to breed or to show in a mix breed competition .
There are pro and con articles on all type trainning on the net .Most of the time just type in the type training in a search engine and it will take you to alot of places to go to get the info you want .Just remember there is no 2 dogs alike in temperment and in personality , so each is different in the amount of time ,the preecedure you would use and etc.Alot of training is up to the amount of time YOU put into it .
Make sure the breeder has a vet ,a health check on the puppy done by a vet before it leaves the breeder. That the puppy is not under 10 weeks old ,has had 2 shots given by the vet ,at least a 7 to 10 day guarentee that ifsomething goes wrong with the puppy that came from the breeders or if a genetic health issue such as heart or other comes up you can get your money back or at least part of it or another puppy if possible .
References to me is a non issue(even though I ask for them and give references) as any breeder that has placed puppies can give a reference and no breeder would gve you a disatisfied customer as a reference .But ask for them anyway .There are hundreds of Questions to ask the breeder ,I cannot listthem all .So,just do research and ask any that pop into your head .

Hi there Vanez,

As far as questions to ask the breeder. Instead of listing all the important questions to ask a breeder, I would recommend that you go to a major search engine on the internet and type in the search box, "questions to ask a breeder." A vast majority of the websites that will be listed as a result of your search contain a lot of valuable info. and great questions to ask your potential breeder. There are a lot of reputable breeders out there, but at the same time, there are a lot of irresponsible breeders out there. A careful search and thorough examination of your potential breeder is an absolute must. Your "gut-feeling" is also something to pay close attention to. If you feel as though something is not quite right about the breeder, run as fast as you can and never look back

Good reading materail for puppy owners.
1)Housetraining (which includes crate training, litterbox training, and many others): "An Owner's Guide To A Happy Healthy Pet. Housetraining" (housetraining is one out of a series) And at the bottom of the cover it says September Morn, whether that is the author or not I am not sure. In addition, on the cover there is a Golden Retriever sitting on some newspaper, if that helps you spot the book better. This book can be found in most pet stores, but if you can't find it there then you should be able to purchase it from bookstore.

As far as general training books are concerned, I never bought any because I immediately enrolled my pups in obedience classes and found out all the info. I needed in regards to training there. But, there are a lot of excellent training books out there, I am just not familiar with the names.

As far as papers go for the dam and sire. I felt it was necessary to buy my two shih-poos from a breeder who bred two pure breds (in my case, a poodle x shih-tzu), and I did make sure that the breeder was able to provide papers, and then some. This just made me more comfortable. Quite frankly speaking, asking for the papers from a breeder all boils down to personal preference, but in my opinion it is a good idea to ask for them.

Hope this helped a bit!

Good luck with your search!!!
Kristi
