Hi everyone,

I am in great need of some nail clipping advice regarding one of my shih-poos. One of them has all black nails (that is a daunting thought for me) and I am absolutely terrified to cut them myself. I do go to my groomer every six to eight weeks for the dogs to be groomed and she does clip their nails when she grooms them, but they do need to be clipped in between grooming appointments. I have asked my groomer for some advice about clipping the black nails and she has provided me with some good advice, but I am still nervous about doing it. My other shih-poo has clear nails and those are a piece of cake to trim, but unfortunately that is not the case with my other shih-poo.

So, I would like to hear some suggestions/tips/advice from any of you who have had experience with this subject. For example, what should I look for so I don't cut into the quick? (I know there is supposed to be a grayish colored dot in the middle that signifies the beginning of the quick, but their nail are so small that it is hard to see.) How far in do I clip? Is there a way to see where the quick is on black nails? Etc.

ANY tips would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Thanks in Advance,
Kristi

I have the groomer cut my dogs nails for $5 inbetween having him groomed...he won't let me cut them myself. I can cut Natalie's nails myself and they are dark so I can't see the quick. I just cut little peices off at a time and watch the coloring inside the cut part to make sure I don't go too short.

I found this site helpful - it has photos of dark nails and what the inside will look like when you are close to the quick: http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/ClientED/dog_nails.htm

You should buy a mini dremel. And file(drill) the nail away. You can see how far to go. Once you start to see soft but firm and flat tissue you stop. One the bottom it will come off fast. I believe they call that the meat. But its not really. Well, when the nail does not have that horse shoe shape. I will try to look up a sight for you.
