Hi,

I just picked out a beautiful tri colored shih tzu puppy from his litter.

My vet noticed, after much searching, that one of his testicles has not descended yet.

I've read and been told it still has a few months before it could show up. They usually drop by 6 months.

Does anyone have any experience with this, with it showing up, or not showing up, or with method to help it descend?

Thank you.

I dont think there is anything you can do to help it ddecend. and if there is then i dont know of it and i wish i did. My breeder bought and imported a Male Havanese all he way from spain only to find out that one of his testicles hadnt fully desended. I dont think it matters unless you are going to show him in the sport of Conformation or breed him. but dont worry they usually drop on there own and someimes just take a little longer. But i dont think that its anything the breeder can control.

I would not worry about one that was 11 weeks old not having both down .I have had at 12 weeks some to be down and some not .This is a process that over time will help itself to materalize .So ,be patient and don't worry about it .

he's such a great healthy little puppy in all other respects, paper trained already, so good, we'll watch the testicle to see if it comes down

Is it dangerous for the pup it their testicles do not decend? My tea cup poodle was a year old in Nov. and his has not dropped either, I was not going to use him for breeding anyway but I do not want this to harm him. Thanks...Karla

My sisters shelter poodle had an undesended testicle. He was around 3 years old. Of course they neutered him, but with that sort of thing the surgery was more invasive. He is fine. Gosh I wish I could remember the name that they called it. You never would have guessed it was undesended testies by the name I think it was cryptorchid or something like that.

I would recommend that any dog with undescended testicles be neutered. They are at a very high risk for testicular cancer with this disorder. They also should not be bred because it is hereditary and can be passed on. It can cause infertility too because the testicles need to be cooler than the rest of the body. That is why they are in the scrotum. Also there isn't any way to help it descend. This happens naturally. It may happen eventually and it may not.

Have you checked him yourself? You might try a 2nd opinion.

I had a Husky mix that we adopted from a shelter who had a un-descended testicle. We waited for a year for it to drop, but it never did. I could see and feel for myself that the testicle was un-descended. Our vet told us that there is an increased risk of developing testicular cancer if the dog was not neutered. Of course, we had him neutered. The procedure is a little more complicated than a normal neuter and it cost a little bit more. But, everything went well and he lived a long and happy, healthy life.
