I am so excited that my family is getting an adoreable Yorkie in October! The pups were born on August 18 and the breeder says it will be okay to bring our Yorkie home at 8 weeks. I have read that if it isn't intended for a show dog that 8-10 weeks is okay for the pup to go to his new home. In my research I have also read that only 12 weeks is okay to take the puppy home...Is 8 weeks alright? I don't want to jeopardize our little pup in anyway. Thanks

I got my toy poodle when she was 10 weeks old. She was a little depressed from being away from her brother and sisters for a few days, but after that she was fine. I think 8 weeks is okay, maybe a little young. She may wine alot at night and stuff but be patient. I hope you know how much work they are when they are pups. I didnt know what to expect and I was so frustrated. The potty training and house training and crate training and teething...I thought it would never end. Just remember that a puppy has to go potty alot more than an adult dog. My Angel went ever 30 minutes there for awhile. The crate will be so helpful to you. It will be good to train her from the first day. There are more posts in this forum about crate training if you want to read up on it. I think they are in the "All dog" group. Glad your getting an addition to the family. Cant wait to see pics soon hopefully!

IMO, 8 wks is fine.
Some breeders prefer 12wks because prior to this is a critical socialization period. I got one of my dogs at 7wks.....I made sure she got lots of socialization and she turned out to be a wonderful dog.

Well, I got my Yorkie/silky from this breeder who I knew really nothing about. I admit that this was my first time buying a dog from a person. (we just usually take strays or pound dogs). I had just lost my cat, so I really just wanted another companion so fast that I didn't check her out. I got my adorable puppy, at about 7 wks old! He was fine for like 2 days, but then all of a sudden sickness came upon him. Took him to the vet and they first said Coccidia. We treated him for that but it didn't get better. We took him to the Emergency vet and they said Parvo. We tried to save him, by doing so many things but he was way to weak. We had him put down, and did much much more research (and tons of cleaning to rid the parvo) and we found our breeders! My mom got a yorkie and I got a Maltese. They were both within maybe 2-3 days of being 12 wks old. I think my mom's was older actually. And they are very healthy. Anyways, I was just trying to prove a point to research yuor breeder, and dont be afraid to ask her/him questions! So in my opinion I say no less than 11 wks.

Nessa,Nern, Ilovemypets,

Thanks so much for your response! Because of your information we have decided to wait until 11 wks. to bring the puppy home. Also, we'll be crate training "Jack". We are so excited!! I'll post pics once we bring him home. Thanks again!

Also make sure the puppy has had at least 2 to three shots (parvo shots ) before you bring them home and the shots were at least 15 days apart .The reason (my vet says ) is because if under that amount of time the shot gives a false sense of security .Which means if the breeder gives feed store shots and every two weeks or even 10 days the puppy may or may not be protected .My vet gives mine theirs every three weeks ,he says that way the puppy is protected the best and he refuses to do it every two weeks .Says not protected as well .I can ask for more info on this if you want .I will see him this week .I just follow his advice and have had no problems (knock on wood ) with parvo .

I was talking to a lady yesterday that had a male Chihuahua for sale, in my state. Everything was going OK until I asked her when she lets her puppies go. She said that if I liked him next Sunday, that I could take him home then. He'd only be 6 weeks. I'm still going to go and look at him next Sunday, if this poor little guy needs my help I'm ready to do anything in my power to get him that help. If I do get him I'll go and buy some puppy forula, some oatmeal, and a new heating pad. He'll sleep with my female Chihuahua, and I'm sure she'll love that!!! If I do get him, does anyone have any experience with a puppy this young? My sister breeds Pug's so she's told me alot of advice. Her big one was DONT GET HIM, lol.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

By 6 wks of age the puppy should be fully weaned so you should'nt need to buy any formula if you do decide to get him. I think some breeders (not reputible ones) figure as long as they are weaned its fine to let them go so young without considering the critical socialization period the puppy needs with its mother and littermates at that time. Maybe you can ask your vet for some advice on getting a puppy this young. Good luck and keep us posted.

I am going to buy the formula to put into the oatmeal. I'll probably feed him some oatmeal mixed in with Royal Cainin's Weaning puppy food. I wasnt going to get him at first, but if she is willing to let him go at such a young age I want him to go to someonw who knows what they are doing. And has the money for anything that comes up. So he'd have a great home here. I'll keep you all posted!!

I do not pull my puppies from mom until she is ready to let them go .Sometimes (espically with Maggie ) she will suckle them until they are 8 weeks old or older.
THe smaller the puppies the longer they need mom ,so I do not make a habbit of weaning at 6 weeks .Mine go from 10 to 12 weeks old according to size and if they are fully adjusted to all circumstances (people friendly ,using puppy pads ,not afraid to be with a stranger ,playful ,eating dry food ,etc.) Maltipoos get their teeth in later than some so I usually don't try to wean them until they are 7 to 8 weeks old .
