Well It should start with a good spray on conditioner. You spray her whole leg and I could get a stainless steel metal comb to comb through nice even strokes. My alex had matts everywhere, so I took him to get groomed and cliped to the "puppy cut"... And when she is bathed make sure you get a good creme rinse conditioner and dont be afraid to drench the legs in it.

i agree with i lovempets use conditioner it works really good. the easiest way to do it is to get shampoo with conditioner in it.make sure you apply the shampoo/conditioner directly to the areas that your having trouble with
here's another tip if you blow dry her she will be much easier to brush

Sometimes a dog will get past the puppy stage with its hair(which the puppy hair is usually finer) but some dogs hair does not change. It sounds like your dog has that very fine hair. Try doing what they have said the conditioning and definatley blow dry the hair (try in the direction it grows) to smooth it out. Brush often. Keep a few brushes handy and where you happen to be sitting grab that brush. Other than that you may need to have her trimmed in the puppy cut.

julia.. just recently i found some matting on bella just where you described you have on winnie, behind the ears and in the armpits.. i also use conditioner on her when i bathe which does seem to help; however, this time she had one flea and now the itching has caused matts.. this past saturday i went over to my parents with bella and showed my mother the matting (my mother has been grooming her lhasa for 13 years) and she let me borrow this comb with metal teeth that spin.. it worked miracles! i have a slicker brush and a pin brush but those hurt bella when she has matts but this comb was great.. i'm sure you could find one at your local pet superstore.. good luck

Is it ok to use Pantene Shampoo/conditioner on her hair? I have a female pom and was needing to know if it would be ok for her to use a human shampoo on her. I have an oatmeal flea shampoo I use on her but she itches alot and she really doesn't have fleas right now with the weather being cold where I am at.

also.. how do you brush your dog?

one more question.

Can anyone tell me how to keep the dog from running off while you are trying to hold her to blow dry and brush? and the leave -n conditioner.. is it doggie kind or human??

I use pantene on my dogs. Also mane and tail. I've tried the dog shampoos but they don't seem to do any different than the ones I use now. The mane and tail has a leave in conditioner. If your dog is running away, maybe leashing her or doing all the grooming in a closed room may help. If she is young, she needs alittle soothing while bathing and blowdrying. Eventually she will love at least part of it. My poodle deals with the bath, but comes running for the blow dry. Make sure you are not brushing too hard also. Hopefully a pom owner will come along soon.

I wouldn't exactly recommend using any "human shampoos" (nor conditioners) on dogs. Reason being because the pH in human shampoos (& conditioners) is quite different from that of the pH in dog shampoos. Simply speaking, the pH in human shampoos is incompatible for any dog's skin type. There are many other differences between a dog's skin type and that of a humans (ex. thickness, acidic levels, etc.) and each of those important factors are closely kept in mind when formulas are developed for dog and human shampoos.

Use of a human shampoo on a dog can result in mild to severe irritation to a dog's skin as well as other skin problems. Some dogs do not have problems with the use of human shampoos, but the best bet is to stick with shampoos and conditioners that are strictly made for dogs. Tearless shampoos & conditioners (for dogs) are also a plus for your dog's sake!

Most vets, groomers, and online information will advise you to stay away from human shampoos and conditioners and opt for shampoos and conditioners designed precisely for dogs.

Bottom line, stick with dog specific shampoos and conditioners for the safety of your dog!!!

Just my opinion,
Kristi

Can someone please recommend to me a good dog shampoo and conditioner then? I don't want to irritate her skin by using mine. although she does smell better when I use my shampoo verses hers.

I have a small bathroom and I did close the door but she runs from the blow dryer. when I try to hold her and talk softly to her.. it just doesn't help.. maybe with time.

any other suggestions on this?

Michelle~

I use Perfect Coat Tearless Protein Shampoo (it is yellow in color) & Perfect Coat Conditoning Rinse (it is pink in color). I have been using this particular brand for a while now and it works wonderfully! This brand can be found in just about any pet supply store.

In addition, every couple of baths, I use Earthbath Totally Natural Oatmeal and Aloe shampoo and conditioner. This is VERY good for dogs who have a lot of itching. This brand can also be found in most pet supply stores.

Only reason why I use the Earthbath shampoo & conditioner once every couple of baths is because my dogs don't have an issue with itching, I just use it to add a little extra moisture to their skin. But, if your dog does have dry/itchy skin, then you could use this particular shampoo & conditioner every time you bathe your dog!

As far as the hair dryer goes:

1) If your dog does have dry/itchy skin I would definitely stay away from using a "human hair dryer," as the hair dryer will dry out your dog's skin even further causing more itching problems. So, I would suggest purchasing a hair dryer made specifically for dogs. They have special features designed especially for dogs. They are GREAT!

2) Offer your dog treats when blow dyring her. Offering your dog treats makes the experience a positive one for her.

3) Keeping your dog in a small bathroom when blow drying her is a good idea. To keep her by you, you may need to use a leash.

4) If your dog is sincerely scared of the hair dryer, then you will have to desensitize her to the hairdryer.

Hope this helped,
Kristi

Thank you for your advice on grooming my dog. I think she does pretty good in the bath tub, but when she is let out, she is ready to run free. I can't seem to get her to just sit still for a minute. If I hold her and stand up.. she seems to do ok, but then I can't brush her well while trying to hold her.

I will try to ease her into the blowdrying technique. alot of times i Let her ears go and not brush her until she has had a chance to run around alittle while.. because she is scratching me and trying so hard to get loose. I take her to a groomer every month for a good bath and her nails trimmed and ears cleaned out. I mainly do this to get her use to other people and to get her more use to getting a bath.

you should have combed your dog frequently or else it will get mats from simply scratching itself. The best thing to do is to cut them out befroe they get bigger and if you dont it will get bigger and dirt will get stuck in it and it might get fleas and ticksi n there too.

yup i would go with the spray on condittioner.
also there is a type of brush called a wire slicker brush or you can use a small pin brush, as long a it doesnt have 'heads' on the ends becasue that just rips the hair and pulls it out.
Also when you bath her make sure you use a really good top of the line conditioner. leave a little bit in wehre she gets mats and then they wont from as fast also dont dress her up or put little sweaters on her trus me this make everything 10 times as worse

My poodle gets a lot of matting as well.. I try to comb her everyday, but she still gets matts. I only bath her about once a week. I see on this post a lot of diffrent types of shampoo/conditioners, are any of them good for a poodle? As well, is there anything I can do about her staticy ears? Her ears are always so staticy and I just don't know what to do!

Any help is appreciated!

I use Johnsons baby shampoo with aloe on my maltipoo. She's never gotten matts in her hair nor has she ever gotten any skin irritation. A friend of mine who has a maltipoo also uses the same shampoo.

i used to use purely for puppy.. but lately i have not been able to find it so i bought earthbath.. they have numerous shampoos to help treat all different things and then a creme rinse.. you can check out their products at www.earthbath.com and on that site you can see where they sell the products near you.. it is all naturaly ingredients and therefore very gentle on your pups skin and coat.. harsh abrasives, like sodium lauryl sulfate/sodium laureth sulfate, which are found in both human shampoos and dishwashing soap are drying to both the skin and coat.. earthbath does not contain these cleansers..

I agree with Rosie.... I use Baby shampoo on my pups, and when Char was pregnant...but other than that I use regular Suave Shampoo and conditioner. Once a month they get a flea bath with Adams Flea and Tick Shampoo. THose of you who live in Texas know how bad the fleas and stuff can get!!
I'm glad my dogs have short hair,,,,they dont matt, thank goodness. but for the rescues who show up, I usually end up shaving them or taking them to a groomer who will do it for free for me.

Thank you! I am going to go to walmart tonight and get her some baby shampoo. I will at least try it and see if it works. I like to try to bath her at least once every weekend or other weekend.
