The oldest kitty that i have, Sarah, has recently started violently fighting with the other two cats that I have. Sarah was an abused kitty when we adopted her as a kitten and has always been a little testy. She is fixed and well taken care of, but lately she and the littlest kitty have spent all day and night growoling and hissing at each other, running through the house chasing each other, and fighing so hard that they are actually hurting each other.

They have only been at it for about a week and before that they got along fine. I don't know if it is relitive but Sarah who is an indoor cat (all of them are) got outside for about 5 minutes. When she came back in, the little kitty as well as the middle kitty all started beating each other up!

What should I do? Do you think any of them could be sick?

Sarah even hissed, spat and bit my husband who is her best friend when he tried to calm her down.

I have had to lock them up in seperate rooms just so they don't kill each other. Please Help.

I've heard of cats acting this way towards each other after one returns from the vets. Im wondering if your kitty that escaped might have picked up some kind of scent that the other cats find offensive but after a week I would think everything would be back to normal by now.
If this behavior continues, I would probably have the older cat checked by a vet to rule out any medical problems that could be causing this sudden behavior. I've noticed that with one of my dogs...when he is'nt feeling well he acts crabby towards everyone including me.
Maybe another poster will have some more thoughts on this.

Hello. Welcome to the site. I agree with everything Nern said. You could also try rubbing each cat down with the same towel, that way all of their smells are on each cat. This sometimes helps if the behavior is not do to a medical problem. After you have done this, feed each cat in their seperate rooms. Once they are nice and full let them all out and see how they interact (cats tend to be calmer when they are full/not hungry). If you're still having problems, you may want to take Sarah to the vet. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you very much for all your advice.

Sarah has been hiding in the back room (with the door open) since i made this post this morning. Everytime i go to the room to even sweet talk her into comming out she hisses at me. I hate to say it but I think i am afraid of my own kitty! She has really gotten that mean! Rubbing them with the same towel sounds like it may work, but i cant get near her.

I will go put a seperate food bowl in the room where she is and close the door so she isn't disturbed by the other kittys and maybe she will be more friendly in the morning. My only problem is i don't want to "punish" her.

I guess if she isn't back to normal by tomorrow i'll try to get her in the carrier to go to the vet. She's really gotten scary.

If she is sick, what could be wrong? She doesn't seem to be physically harmed.

Thanks again.

Hello. If Sarah is 'hiding' it can be a sign of illness. Cat's often hide when they are not well. Also, the fact that she is showing aggressive behavior is another sign of possible illness. If it was my kitty, I would not wait it out. I would take her to the vet as soon as possible. If you are worried about her scrathcing you when you try to put her in her carrier, just put some gloves on (any kind) and wear a thick long sleeve shirt/jacket. Keep us posted.

I have spent the day calling around to different vets offices and most of them seemed to think, based on my description, that i should wait to see how Sarah was doing tonight.

When I got home from work, she was still on th bathroom counter. The door has been open, but she just doesn't want to come out. She seems deppressed. I have gone in the room and sat down, and she will sit on my lap for about 2 minutes and be petted before she starts to get cranky and jumps right back up on the counter again. I took her her own food and water bowl and set it on the counter and closed the door so she could get some privacy. That seemed to help a little bit.

So although she still won't come out of the bathroom, she is showing signs of improvement. She does still growl quietly when one of the other cats comes close to the door (or if i try to pet her too long).
She doesn't seem like she is going to attack like she did yesterday.

I think I'll wait one more day before i try the towel trick. Since she purred for me this afternoon, i think she might need a bit more attention. Hopefully she'll be back to normal soon.

littleredmonster...... she could be in pain over something.

There was a point where our little pixie was the crankiest thing in the world. She was irritable, and hissed a lot.

It turned out that she had a horrible toothache.... her baby tooth did not come out properly, it got lodged in the gum and there was abcess.

Hubby took a small cotton bud, eased it out, five minutes later she was a happy kitty again.

Try to see if there's something that's causing her pain. animals just don't get angry at things they love for no reason.
