Hi: this message is directed specifically towards FLEAFLY and BENZZ. My cat had just been diagnosed of kidney failure. She is eating very little and bein dehydrated. This is quite odd because my cat is comparably young compared to others with the same disease (turning 6).
1. (fleafly) if you could kindly let me know what exactly kind of diet you put your cat on (post on september 8, 2003) and how often you gave her fluid under the skin, I would really appreciate it. Is yoru cat completely recovered now?
2. (BENZZ) Where do i get this "fortekor" ? Also, do cat-acunpucturists exist? Thank you very much.

I've been feeding my cat Meow Mix and Frisky, and i heard that could be why she got kidney failure. Is this possible? how can they do this? I had no idea that certain food may cause disease in cats. Once this is confirmed, I am planning to write a letter to them.

THank you all for your help. If anyone has any other information on how I shoudl treat my cat (diet, exercise, medicine), please do not hesitate to let me know. This is a hard time for me and my family, and I am beyond grateful for all your help.

Thanks

My vet told me to give IV fluid of 100 ml twice a day if you can (best) or 200 ml a day if it's a problem for the cat sitting still, do this for a least 10 days. Search goggle.com under cat kidney problem for more information on the problem. Avoid milk, phosphate in food or salt. There is a food called "feline K/D" from Hill's Prescription Diet that is formulated for cat's with kidney problem. Basiclly you want to stress the kidney as least as possible as it process the toxins in its body. Kidney failure results in death when the cat can't process the toxins out and it accumulates and poisons its blood, so a correct diet is very important. Best of luck to your buddy, I hope he/she pulls through.

Im not sure if the food could have caused kidney failure in your cat....since your cat is quite young there could be many causes. Processing large amounts of low quality proteins could probably overwork the kidenys although Im not positive about that. At any rate, your cat should be on a prescription diet now to prevent further damage to the kidneys. Has your vet suggested a special diet for her?

Dang it I forgot how to do the qoute thing!!!

My cat that had kidney problems, Spooky, was a stray that my friends found while she was pregnant. After the babies were born she got sick so we took her to the vet. The vet told us that she had kidney failure and that we should just go ahead and put her to sleep b/c she probably wouldn't get better. We didn't want to give up until it was clear there was no hope. They put her on a special kidney diet that you get from the food. It is lower in protein so it wont overwork the kidneys. It is a hill's diet but I can't remember exactly which one. We also gave her nutrical as a supplement.

We gave her subcutaneous fluids, I can't remember how much we gave her at a time. I can't remember how long we gave them to her. I think we did it for about two weeks. Spooky was really good and would just lay there for it and not fight it. One day she just stormed off and wouldn't let us give her any fluids. She didn't get anymore fluids and she was fine after that.

She is perfectly fine now. She is healthy and happy. Her kidney problems were probably brought on from being a stray and the stress of having kittens. Plus she may have gotten into some oil or something on the street. I don't know if the prognosis is different depending on what causes the kideny problems or not.

Personally I would hold out and see how the cat does. Some cats really fight and get better against all odds. I don't know for sure if your cat will or not, but why not give it a chance.
