i have been looking around at other posts and would like some further advice if possible. my cat smokey, 10yrs old has always been an indoor healthy cat. in Nov we got my daughter her own kitty (smokey is her brother - she is 9). we got whiskers from a shelter and he immediately got a resp infection, which he gave smokey also. $350.00 later (emergency vet care) both cats needed to be treated. While sick smokey ate little. Vet explained about the nose/smell connection. Early January smokey started sneezing again and we gave him more anti -biotics (vet recommended) ok he started acting more normal. purring, sitting with us, sleeping with us, complaining he wanted fresh water. We thought all was well but my husband noticed her was not eating. He MAY be eating when we are not home. He comes over and sniffs whiskers' can food but doesn't eat. He does not seem to be eating his dry food either. i picked smokey up yesterday, and as my husband said - he feels lighter?! He acts normal except for his eating/ not eating? after reading all i guess i will be bringing him to the vet tomorrow ( late hours) unill tomorrow, any suggestions to what i can try tonight to see if he will eat?? when i get home i will check out his teeth. any other thoughts? thank you all.

For the "cold", please try l-lysine @ 250mg twice a day. This is an amino acid that blocks herpes virus (the most common cat "cold" virus) and allows the kitty to deal with the attack. Antibiotics will do nothing for the virus, but will keep him from getting a secondary infection. You might ask the vet about antivirals.

The l-lysine does little else in the cat's system other than to block the virus, so it can be taken with food and medications without harm.

You must get the kitty to eat, even if it means force feeding him or keep him in the hospital for IV fluids. If he will hold food down, use an oral syringe and feed him a watered down canned food. See if you can get a lamb and rice combination. I don't care much for the stuff you can get at pet stores and especially the grocery store, but your kitty must eat something. Iams has a lamb and rice canned food, even though lamb and rice aren't the only ingrediants. It might be the best thing to get in a pinch.

If Smokey doesn't start eating, he could develop hepatic lipidosis. Please read the information contained in this link:

Also, since Smokey is 10, have you had a senior cat blood panel and urinalysis done for the kitty? If not, please have both done immediately. It will let you know if there is something else going wrong.

thanks cmr for your info....
i checked out the links - they are very interesting and scary.
we took smokey to the vet last night for blood tests. the vet said he looked fine and normal but we will see what his bloodwork says. i must wait till later this afternoon to get the results... he also said that getting a new kitten also may put the older one under stress.
we will see. thank you so much for your post and care.
