Well Sam went to the vet Friday to be neutered. The good news is all surgery went well and he is seeming better already!

The not so good news is before the surgery... They called me to let me know they they would need to pull his bottom 2 incisors while he was under. Apparently, his two bottom teeth grew in crooked and were like puncturing the roof of his mouth causing a lot of pain when he closed his mouth. So, I ok'ed that procedure as I do not want him to be in pain!

But they also explained something to me that is causing me to worry!! Sam has severe gingivitis and gum disease with NO apparent cause - no tarter build up or anything like that, quite clean teeth in fact. They think it COULD be from the teeth being skewed and the pain BUT it could also be an early warning sign of FIV or Lukemia. So we have to wait and see if the teeth being removed helps his gums. If that problem does not clear up, then we will have to have him tested. His mother was tested and was negative but he never was. I am worried that the shelter I got him from lied about that test and if they really don't even know. I am also worried that if he has it, Rory will get it and I would be devastated if my kitties has one of those diseases!

Has anyone ever heard of this gum disease as an early warning sign of FIV or Lukemia? Any good sites I can read up about this stuff? Anything anyone can tell me/say would be great. Thanks!

Hello. I just want to let you know that anytime a cat comes to the vet's office with irritated gums or more specifically periodontal disease (gum disease), they will often say there is a possibility of FIV. This is because %50 of cats with FIV will have periodontal disease and ulcerations in their mouth. However, that does not mean that Sam has FIV for certain. Not all cats/humans need tartar build-up to develope irritated gums. There are other causes for irritated gums in cats other than FIV.

Just hang in there and get him tested as often as your vet feels necessary for FIV. Sometimes, one test is not enough and they have to be tested over many months. I'm sure you're very worried right now. I would be too, if my vet mentioned FIV to me about my cat. All you can do for now is keep having Sam tested and wait and see what the results are.

My cat has gingivitis but my vet told me not to worry about FIV or anything else causing it. She said that his is probably b/c he was a stray and his mom was malnourished. Apparently a lot of abandoned kittens and shelter cats don't get proper nutrition so their teeth don't form right and they are prone to teeth problems like gingivitis. I wouldn't freak out. It could be a benign cause.
