Hello. Welcome to the site. How is your kitty doing? What kind of pills and shots did your kitty get at the vets?

thank you for reading my post. my cat micky is not doing well at all. my vet told me he has upper respiration infection and because he was not willing to eat or drink anything. they have to keep him in hospital. my other cat nicky just start to sneeze, but i am still giving him the medicin that vet give. (clavamox--amoxivillin and clavulanate potassium tablets) i don't know if the pill will help. but i hope both of them will be ok soon.

thanks for caring.

if a cat can't smell their food they won't eat. If your cat's nose is getting really stuffy from the URI you can steam up your bathroom (run a hot shower for awhile keeping the door shut) and take your cat in there for awhile. That'll help loosen up any congestion.

URI are no fun at all. I fostered a family of mom cat and her newborn kittens last fall that all came here with URIs...it was horrible. But once the antibiotics kick in the cat gets over the cold quickly.

Most cat "colds" are a form of herpes viurs that your cats carry around with them for the rest of their lives. When they are symptomatic like that, they are actively shedding this virus. I work with a rescue organization and foster kitties like this sometimes We give them l-lysine at the first sign of URI. The dosage is 250mg twice a day. I've read, however, that it doesn't build up in the system, so what isn't used is flushed out (like vitamin C). It doesn't get rid of the symptoms immediately, but is supposed to help them get over the virus more quickly. Some people give lysine to their pets continuously just to keep them from having an attack.

Theoretically, l-lysine blocks the herpes virus enabling your kitty's system to fight it off more quickly. There are not as many studies done with animals as with humans, so there hasn't been much in the way of real scientific research. However, I've found that it works with my cats, especially if I start the dosage as soon as I hear a sneeze.

You can get this stuff at a grocery store or pharmacy. Usually it comes in tablets, but I've been lucky enough to find it in capsules so that I don't have to crush them. If kitty isn't eating, you might get an oral syringe and dissolve the lysine in some water and feed it to him that way. When he is eating, you can put it in his food.

If you want any more info, just type in "lysine for cats" into google or ask your vet about it. Vets have known about this for years.
