We have an 18 year old male Burmese cat that has lost interest in food and is only drinking water once or twice a day. His weight is down extremely and he sleeps all of the time. The past few days he doesn't even get out of his bed. Is this the normal way for an older cat to die? He appears to be malnourished but has no apparent pain or discomfort.

His time may not be right now to go. He may just be ill and it would be best to have a vet take a look at him. In the meantime give your kitty some water with a clean dropper. Cats need water. Very important. Also, let him have some soft food, as he may be unable to eat hardfood for various reasons. Also cats at this age can not smell their food very well and tend to lose interest in eating if they can't smell it.
It would be a shame if his condition could be reversed by a trip to the vet, but you opted not to. Please just take him to a vet. Who knows he may get better and live many more years. Keep us posted.

please take your cat to the vet - good health care is so important at his age. And his age is a good testament to the care you have given. Don't let it end now

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately our cat died during the night. He didn't suffer through the past weeks and I am convinced he simply succumbed to old age.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your kitty. It sounds like he had a happy and long life.

It is very hard when they get old. Be thankful he passed away peacefully and had a good life with you.
