Eve seems to have gone into heat. Two nights ago she made this weird little cry then for the next two days the male cats(who are all neutered) have been mounting her.

I got Eve in August of 2002. She was the neighbors cat but they didn't take care of her so she just moved in and I couldn't get her to leave. I think she was 6-9 months when I first met her in August of 2002. That means she was born 12/99-2/02. I assumed she was fixed b/c she had never gone into heat. The vet couldn't feel any scars and said she couldn't tell unless she opened her up. Since all of the other cats are fixed I figured we would wait and see. I didn't want to do unneccesary surgery.

So now it is 1/04 and she has gone into heat for the first time. She has to be 23-25 months old. Has anyone had a cat that went into heat at 2 years old? I was really surprised when she went into heat, b/c she is so old and hadn't gone into heat yet so I figured she was fixed. Weird!

I took in a cat who was the same way. We were asked to take care of a guy who worked with DH cat. The guy said he thinks the cat has been fixed as she never went into heat and was 2 years old. we decided to keep her in our garage since she did not get along with my 3 other in the house cats. Well the guy never came back for his cat. A year went by and somehome Garage cat as we ended up calling her got out one day and did not come back for 2 weeks a few months went by and we ended up with 5 kittens. I took her to the vet to get fixed and he thinks her age was about 3 or 4 and was very surprise she had never been in heat before age 3. He said it dose happen to some cats thow no one knows why. Garage is now a very happy inside 6 year old fat healthy cat and her kittens all found great home and 3 still visit her often for play dates.

I suppose it can happen, I have not had personal experience with a cat that waited so long to come into season, but here are a few theories : like someone suggested earlier, perhaps she was malnurished or such that her body did not come into its normal cycle for its age, and now that she is in a secure home with a good diet and been well cared for, her body has become ' normal '

but another theory : she may have been a silent caller all this time, not coming into season regularly but also silently, they passed by unnoticed. But the older she gets the more her body is telling her to have babies, the heat cycles are adapting to a more normal, vocal and often acrobatic behaviour.

I would opt for the exploritory surgery, get her spayed ( there is such a thing as a cat being spayed but still coming into heat because of a bad surgery leaving a 'stump' of the ovary behind ) Having the surgery will minimise the risk of uterine infections, unwanted pregnancies and reproductive cancers.

She is going in on Tuesday to get fixed. She wasn't very vocal this time, but the male cats were mounting her. I'm guessing if she was in heat before they would have mounted her.

She has been with me for a year and a half, but I guess it could take her body that long to adjust from being malnourished. She was fairly healthy when I got her, but mostly cause I left food out for the stray cats and she ate that. I never saw her "owners" feed her.

I was just really surprised when she went into heat. I just wish I would have known and could have gotten her fixed sooner. She is 2 now and the surgery will be a bit harder on her.
