I live here in the good ole midwest and it is very cold and very dry. My kitties have such terrible static..If I pet them in the dark I can see sparks. Any idea what I can do to help this problem? It hurts to pet them and we are always shocking each other.

I know what you mean...Im having the same problem here. I feel so bad because almost every time I pet them we give each other a shock. I'd be interested in hearing of a solution to this problem as well.

running a humidifier will help. I finally had to buy a good one (had a cheapo little one that only helped about a 2" square area)...anyway the night-time static pets stopped when I got this one. Think I paid about $50 at WalMart for it.

But the cats are much happier now that I'm not shocking them all the time. And it's so nice to not get zapped turning on a light (hate it when that happens).

Hello. I have a few suggestions ranging from very cheap solutions to more expensive:

Cheap solutions:
1)Use a nylon stocking (yes, women's stockings) to remove static from your cats. Just brush/pet them with the stocking.
2) If the static is really bad cut the feets off of the nylon stocking, and use them as anti-static gloves to pet your cats, while helping to remove the excess static on their fur.I know it sounds funny, but it does work.

3) Use unscented clothes wipes used in the drier (like unscented Bounce) and wipe the cats down with it to remove static. Same as above, but different product.

3)Pay attention to how you walk. Don't drag your feet on the carpet which will produce more static. If possible don't wear socks/shoes. They help generate more static.

4) Use unscented clothes wipes in your drier for your clothes. That way when you put on your clothes you don't have static waiting to charge/shock your cat.
5) Only use metal or teflon combs to brush your pet. After you brush them, use the nylon stocking or drier sheets (unscented) to get rid of the static build-up on their fur.

More expensive:
1)a special collar cats wear to remove static from their skin and fur. Here is the site: http://www.jmintelligence.co.jp/newProductWatch/2002_01_19.html
It only costs $7.46 dollars (800 yens), but you have to pay for shipping and I'm not sure how much this will cost. Probably under $10.

2)Get a humidifier.
3)Get an electrostatic air filter.

Good ideas...but also I have heard that you can leave a big bowl of water out on a table and that can help with humidity too..
