Hello! My 6 year old guy (Murphy)has this little red mark on his chin. One of my friends told me that there is such a thing as "Cat Acne" and that it's often a manifestation of stress or some other upsetting situation. Just moved into a new house...so I'm wondering if perhaps this might be the cause. So...cat acne. Fact or fiction?

Fact, oddly enough.
Here is a site where you can read about it: http://www.ivillage.com/pets/petsymptomsolver/skin/pages/0,,413234_525102,00.html

also switching from plastic to glass or stoneware dishes helps...the plastic dishes will hold bacteria.

I know people in another cat board for Siamese cats that use Clearisil wipes to help their cats get rid of any feline acne.

Thank you all for your advice...as well as the links to those websites. I think I'll try the Clearasil wipes for a week and see if that clears it up. If not, I'll take him to the vet just to be sure he's OK.

Be sure the area stays dry too as moisture can make it worse.

I had a Persian who had acne on his chin for his whole life and we never found out the cause. So we just managed it as best we could.

dfrancis...thanks so much. Was it a constant thing with your Persian? Or would it go away and then flare up occasionally?

It came and went, but he had it more than he didn't have it. We never could figure out what set it off. Most of the time it was very mild. I kept it clean and dry and only used ceramic dishes. Did all the treatments and everything. Other than the acne he was a very healthy kitty and lived to be 14 years old.

If he lived to be 14 he must have been well loved and cared for. I pray I have at least that long a life with Max (5 years) and Murphy (6 years)!

Thanks for your help!
