On Friday my cat was drooling. A lot. But now he seems to be fine. I made an appointment with the vet for Monday, but I'm thinking of canceling it since he hasn't drooled at all today, and is back to being playful.

Funny thing he did: He was sitting on top of my computer monitor and drooled enough to cause a puddle on the monitor that dripped down to the desk and then onto my modem. He actaully cause a short in the modem and I just got a new one today.

Any ideas what can cause temporary drooling?

was your kitten "kneading bread" while he was drooling?

He was drooling both in his sleep and while awake. I didn't notice any kneading motion, but that doesn't mean it didn't ever happen when I wasn't watching. When I was home he sat in my lap and drooled all over my lap, but didn't kneed.

Hello. Here is a site about the causes and treatment of drooling in cats. http://www.ivillage.com/pets/petsymptomsolver/mouth/pages/0,13523,413232_501266,00.html?arrivalSA=1&cobrandRef=0&arrival_freqCap=1&pba=adid=7027201

Below is a list from this same site of when you should take your kitty to the vet. Since your kitty was just drooling one time, I wouldn't be too worried about it. However, if he continues to do this a visit to the vet would be a good idea.

See Your Vet If...

Your pet is drooling after eating

She has a history of seizures

You suspect that she has eaten something bitter

Your pet is lethargic

Your pet can't open his mouth or is having trouble opening it

He can't close his mouth

He won't eat or has difficulty chewing or swallowing

His tongue, lips, or muzzle are swollen

There is a foreign object stuck in his mouth

His gums are red and swollen, or there is bleeding

Your pet is drooling or panting excessively

His tongue or gums are blue or pale

Your pet has ulcers on his tongue

He is gagging frequently

There is a lump anywhere on his face

He is pawing frequently at his mouth or face

There is a discharge from his mouth or nose that lasts two days or longer

His breath is consistently bad

Your pet's nose is dry, crusty, or bleeding

His mouth is foaming, or he's grinding his teeth

There is dried saliva around the mouth

I took Footsie to the vet today. He's not drooling anymore, but hes sneezing and acting lazy. I know hes not feeling well becuase he didn't even meow when he was in his crate, usually he is very vocal when he's in there.

The vet couldn't find anything wrong and his temp was normal and he didn't have any visible irritation in his mouth. She said that the drooling could be from eating something that irritated his mouth such as a houseplant (although I have all my poisonous ones moved to my bedroom where he isn't allowed) or a spider bite. Or even from biting his own tongue.

Footsie was being grumpy and wouldn't stop growling at the vet. She couldn't hear his lungs over his growling, so she couldn't rule out a respitory infection, especially with his continuing lethargy. She gave me some antibiotics just in case.

Thanks for the up-date. You did the right thing by taking him to the vet, being as he wasn't acting like himself. I had to laugh when you mentioned what a big grump he was being with the vet. I hope he's alright and that it's nothing serious. Keep us posted.

Hello. I know you already took your kitty to the vet but I had to add my thoughts anyway. When I got my kitty at 8 weeks he apeared to be fine. But then he turned into a drool machine. Cane to find out (brought to vet) he had a cold and one way cats demonstrate a cold is they get sores on their tongues. I felt so bad since all i was feeding them was hard/dry food and he had these sores on his tongue. So he had an antibiotic and he started sneeezing and the sores went away and the sneezes statyed like the way a cold does. And then he was fine. I know it's not said the greatest way but maybe he had tongue sores from the cold. They can come and go on their own so that's my guess.
