One of my cats paws is cracking kind of. Is there something I can put n the to help them? It does not seem to hurt him as he is jumping and running and doing everythng he normally does but I noticed today that the front paws are peeling a little. they see kind of dry. Is there some lotion or something I can put on his paws?

Hello. How old is your cat? If your cat is older did you notice that he had dry paws last winter? If so, it could be due to the cold. Is your place heated? Is your cat indoor or outdoor/both? What are you feeding your cat? You may want to add an essential fatty acid into his food or switch to a better cat food.

As for treating it, one of the problems with putting any ointment on cats is that they like to lick it off. Here are some things you can place on your cats paws:

1) straight vitamin E oil-just a small amount (best to use).

2) Vasaline- Although, I would only use this until you get some vitamin E.

3) Bag Balm- It's a product that was used originally for cows hooves, however it is now used to treat dry paws in dogs and cats and can also be used by people for dry hands and feet.

I would suggest that when your cat is sleeping to place a small amount of vitamin E oil to the affected paws. That way there will be less of a chance of him licking it off.

You probably need to give your vet a call about this, but in the meantime you could try rubbing a little bit of shortening into his pads once or twice a day. Shortening is a very good moisturizer and contains no dyes, perfumes...etc, which may irritate it further. Just a little though. He will be licking at his paws, so too much may cause him to have loose stools.

My cat it just over a year old. Last winter he was so sick on and med. that maybe that helped his paws not creak. He is an indoor only cat and yes we have heat We feed our cats science diet only. Mostly hard but twice a week they get a can of soft science diet food. What type of fatty acid coud I add to his food? Or which would be a better food to give him?

Thank you both for your replys!!!

Hello. I think it would be a lot cheaper and easier to simply switch cat foods. I don't want to say that one particular cat food is the best, as there are a variety of foods that are good and not too expensive. Basically, when you go to purchase pet food (soft and hard), such as a Petsmart (as they have many more varieties), look at the first three ingredients. They should all be a type of meat. If it states after the first or second ingredient 'meat by products' or some type of filler like corn, don't buy it. It's okay to have these as ingredients, as long as the first three are what our cats need, which is meat.

You said you only give your cats soft food twice a week. In my opinion and from the many articles I have read, soft food is a needed food for cats. If you're interested in learning more about soft foods for cats I would be more than happy to post some information for you.

I had thought a while back that perhaps feeding my cat so much soft food (as well as hard food) was perhaps not ideal. So, I did a lot (and I mean A Lot) of reading on this subject and everything I read led me to believe that soft food is an important part of their good health. I also learned that small meals throughout the day are best and that cats often like to eat their largest meal at night.

Here is a picture of my healthy shiny cat Handsome who eats soft food three times a day, as well as hard food.

Not Chessmind but I thought you might be interested in reading this article in regards to canned food: http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?action=library&act=show&item=whycatsneedcannedfood

There are also several other informative articles in regards to feeding cats on that site if you look in the "article library". I think you will find them helpful.
