Ever since my mom took in this stray kitten...which was last year....it has been peeing where ever it feels like peeing! Its unbelieveable! It has been a full year now! We kind of treat it like a dog. We let it out all the time hoping it will pee outside. I clean my moms house every week and every time i go there i see him pee somewhere. Her house smells so bad. She got sick of him peeing so she gave him to her mother in law who loves cats, thinkin she could fix the problem, well that didn't work. So she gave him back to my mom. I keep saying either take him to the vet or put him down. But they have grown to love this cat to death, even through this problem! What do you think is wrong and what should we do? thanks!

Hello. It could very well be a UTI (urinary tract infection). Meaning the cat has no control of where it is peeing. Also, when cats have a UTI they may associate the litter box with pain (as UTI's are painful). This is a treatable condition. If the cat is taken to the vet they will give him some meds to clear this up. Good luck and keep us posted.

Yes. I have not heard of them clearing up on their own without meds. Although, it may be possible. However, it is also possible that the cat has had it for a year.

I agree that it sounds like a UTI.

Another thought, if it was a stray it may have never been litter box trained. Did you go through all the trainging with the cat?

It does sound like a UTI, it could be a recurring problem as they do tend to clear themselves, though its uncomfortable for the cat so I wouldn't recommend waiting.

It could be because the cat was a stray and has behavioural problems, letting a cat out to go at specific times isn't ideal but perhaps she doesn't like cat litter. Try putting dirt/soil in her box instead and see if she prefers that.

Also it could be she started off with a UTI but now the not going in the litter box has become ingrained, it will be difficult to get her to stop going outside the box after a year but you sound like you will persevere whatever happens.

Good Luck!
