Don't they just make money by taking away potential homes from kitties that are already with us?

From what I understand..."responsible" breeders make very little if any money and their sole purpose for breeding is to improve the breed. Many of them also have spay/neuter contracts in an attempt to prevent irresponsible breeding in their litters.
Back yard breeders are another story.

I would never get an animal from a breeder as long as there as so many being put to sleep at shelters every day. It seems silly to purposefully bring more animals into an already overcrowded world.

I know some breeders of Siamese and OSH cats...these breeders make absolutely no money off their breeding. These people do not breed irresponsibly. Their kittens only go to approved homes and they get spay/neuter contracts. Also they have the owner sign a contract stating if they cannot keep the cat for any reason they MUST return to cat to them. And these breeders I know are ACTIVE in rescue work also.

I adore Siamese cats and the 2 I have are rescues (Missy from an elderly woman who lived in senior housing and Tilly I got from a woman who had major, couldn't work for a year and could not longer care for Tilly). But...if I could not get a Siamese cat through a shelter or rescue I would go through a breeder after doing extensive research on that breeder. I prefer to adopt a cat in need first though.

Same with a dog - I have a GSD and I am enthralled with the breed. My next dog will also be a GSD - first I'll try a rescue/shelter and if I can't find one I'll either wait or try to find a reputable breeder (I don't want a puppy though).

Some breeders do take what they are doing very seriously

The only kind of breeding that I can understand is breeding of the more exotic purebred cats. And I do think a lot of those breeders are responsible. I liked how one of the other posts mentioned they are sometimes also involved in rescue work. There is no need however for anyone to be breeding domestic chorthairs. Way too many of them are suffering and dying in shelters everyday. But I have yet to see an occicat or egyptian mow (sp?)in a shelter.
