my cat is 6 months old, today we found a wound on her. its about a nickle size wound on her thigh, all her fur is missing around the area. it looks like its an open wound, theres something white sticking out of it, and at first there was a green puss coming out. any ideas what it is? is it ok for her to clean it?

That sounds pretty nasty. What do you mean by there is something white sticking out of it? Also, if there is green puss it might be infected. Clean it with soap and water and put some neosporin on it. If it isn't better soon you need to go to the vet. They might have to really scrub it to clean it and give your kitty antibiotics.

It's okay for her to clean, the only way to stop her is a cone for her head. Just try not to let her lick the neosporin off.

Hello. Welcome to the site. From the sounds of it, it seems like your kitty has an abscess ( a collection of puss). Since it's already draining you can take her to the vet and they will give her a shot of Amoxicillin and then give you liquid Amoxicillin to take home and give to her.

When cats have an abcess they will develope a fever (the bodies way of trying to kill the infection). However, fevers from an abscess can get too high. I would take her to the vet.

A word about money: if you have plenty of money to spend then the vet may want to lance (cut open) and drain the abscess. They like to do this when the cat is put under anesthetic (asleep). Then they would clean it out very good, give her a shot of Amoxicillin and drops to take home. Well, if you have $800 for all this great. If not, since the abscess is already draining, tell your vet you only want the shot of Amoxicillin and the liquid Amoxicillin drops to take home. This will run you under $100.

Then you can just keep the wound wet and clean yourself, that way it does not close up (so that it can keep draining). Cats are actually great at this, by licking it themselves, but if it starts to crust over you have to wet it.
