I've seen the PETA Website before and the whole IAMS thing is disgusting! I have completly boycotted IAMS now. Above is a website that has a petition you can sign. actually you print out their message and take a picture of your pet or yourself and your pet. Send it to the email linked on the site and PETA plans to make a scrapbook of these pictures to send to IAMS.

It may or may not make a difference but its sertainly worth a try.

I too plan on boycotting Iams products. I only had one dog that was on Iams, only because that is what it was being fed when we got him. He is being weened off.
What is sad is that Iams is owned by Procter and Gamble and they have SO MANY PRODUCTS, it's disgusting. It's gonna be hard to do away with them all, but I'm sure it can be done.

So I have to change my laundry detergent, fabric softener, dryer sheets, toothpaste, makeup, and a lot of other things. They make so many products!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does PETA have a draft letter that you can send to the head of Procter and Gamble? They usually have those for their campaigns. I would like to send a letter to Iams and Procter and Gamble.

Okay I made a microsoft word file with all of their products. It is 2 pages with 3 columns each. I did it like that so I can take it shopping until I figure out what all they own. If anyone wants a copy of it, give me your email address and I will send it to you.

Just remember that this site is from PETA, who is considers it cruel for you to have your cats as pets (you're enslaving them...*rolls eyes*). That said, I will continue to use Iams/Eukanuba products on my dogs and cats.

Aimee: I would be careful what you say on where PETA stands on the pet issue unless you can back it up with facts. Here is where they stand on this issue. This is from their site at: http://www.peta.org/about/faq-comp.asp

“Does PETA believe that people shouldn’t have pets?”
The earliest fossils that resemble the bones of modern dogs are about 12,000 years old, so we know that humans’ fascination with domesticated wolves began at least that long ago. About 5,000 years ago, Egyptians became the first to tame cats, whom they used to control the rodent population. Since then, the breeding and care of cats and dogs has exploded into a love affair, a sport, and a booming business. This international pastime has created an overpopulation crisis, and as a result, every year, millions of unwanted animals suffer at the hands of abusers, languish in shelters, and are euthanized. Adopting a cat or dog from a shelter and providing a loving home is a small but powerful way to prevent some of this suffering. The most important thing that animal guardians can do is to spay or neuter their animals and avoid buying animals from breeders or pet stores, which contribute to the overpopulation crisis.

Aimee: I would be careful what you say on where PETA stands on the pet issue unless you can back it up with facts.

Here's part of an article:

Although most of us love the animals who share our lives, we treat them with a kind of benign neglect. For instance, we leave them at home while we work, go shopping, or go to school, and when we return we feed them and take them out briefly or clean out their litter boxes, but often neglect them for most of the time we're at home, while we prepare a meal, talk on the telephone, watch television, write letters, sleep, etc. Companion animals eat when and what we want them to eat, and go out or stay in when we want them to. As John Bryant has written in his book "Fettered Kingdoms", they are like slaves, even if well-kept slaves.
http://articles.animalconcerns.org/ar-voices/archive/pets.html#pets

I am pro-animal wellfare but I will not support PETA. They are an extremist organization and I do not agree with most of their statements. I would rather spend my time/energy helping other, more reputable organizations.

However, if you want to support PETA, that's fine. I still do not believe half of what they said about Iams/Eukanuba and do not feel bad about feeding it to my pets.

I'm split in the middle between wether PETA is good or bad.

I believe that PETA has lots of good ideas and intentions but are also extremists.

After looking over many of their articles closely I found some of the stuff to be a little over the top.

I especially do not agree with how they deal with ferral cats.

Aimee: Maybe you should do some independent research on IAMs and see if PETA is off base or not. I have heard of a lot of other organizations campaigning against IAMs, not just PETA. If other groups are in on the boycott, there is probably truth to the accusations.

Not to mention that if PETA was making up these accusations IAMs would sue them for slander. They are certainly have lawyers on staff to file suits for them.

Personally I decided not to feed IAMs b/c there are a lot of better foods out there. I wasn't impressed at all with their ingredients compared to other foods.

Aimee: Thank you for posting where you got your 'ideas about PETA and pets.' However, I don't think you understood what was being said. If you re-read it, you'll see that PETA is not against people having pets (as I posted previously). This is from the article you posted:
quote:
The world we live in is far from perfect, however, so in the meantime we must take as good care of companion animals as possible. Most of the PETA staff members have at least one dog, cat, bird, rat, horse, or other animal -- not from "pet" shops, of course, but from shelters or the street.

There is no mention of PETA being against having pets. Most of PETA members have pets.

They are more specifically against pets being abused/neglected and the over population of unwanted pets (caused by many factors one of which is people not spaying/neutering their pets. Another example would be puppy/feline mills that keep breeding more animals, even though there are millions that need a good home that are in shelters).

They encourage people to go to the shelter and adopt a cat or dog (assuming they will provide them with a loving new home). However, they do state that this is only a small dent in a rather big problem of unwanted pets.

Regardless of what you think of PETA they have helped stop so many companies from doing needless and cruel animal tests (which are not required by law). An example is the amount of pressure they put on companies like Loreal to stop. And they did. IAMS will be the next to stop their tests. If organizations like PETA and the people like us that voice our opinions to these companies where not around to say 'STOP' there would be so many more animals suffering in this world.

Whether you like PETA or not, saying that they don't think people should have pets, is simply untrue.
