I just got a new cat. The first night I brought him home, he was fine. Very curious, sniffing around at everything. But now he is terrified by my ceiling fans. They aren't even on but he still can't walk past them or under them. He's been hiding in the bathroom all day. Why is he so frightened and is there anything I can do to help him overcome his fear?

Hello. Welcome to the site. How old is your cat and do you by any chance know the history of your cat before you got him? I'm not sure if what spooked your cat was in fact the fans, but if it was perhaps your cat had a bad experience with fans somehow before you got him. Cats do remember things that have occured in their past.

p.s. If your cat wants to stay in the bathroom that's okay. Perhaps that's his 'safe area.' Just leave the door open for him and go in there and pet him now and again, but don't pick him up and force him to go into another room. He'll eventually come out of his 'safe area' and begin to explore and feel at home. If you want to be super nice you can place his food/water and litter in there for him too. That way he can have access to what he needs.

He'll come around. Just be patient and understanding. It will pay off and you'll soon have a wonderful cat who is the King of the house.

Also if the fans really are the issue you can cover them up with some towels or sheets until he becomes comfortable in his new home.

Hi. Thanks for the advice. My cat came from a shelter so I don't know much about his history. He is about nine months old. Now that I think about it, he got frightened by the coffee grinder and has some how associated that sound with the ceiling fan becuase he keeps looking up at them and running away. I have put his food and litter in the bathroom for him.

He will come around. Just let him explore when he is ready to.
