Those 6 cats that we rescued are very sick. We have lost 2 of them, and it exlains why the mothers have disapered. They have all had an outbreak of distemper. the remaining ones are fighting. $1200 later, prophylactic antibiotics, daily sub q fluids, and tlc. Not to mention using more bleach that I thought was humanly possble. Fortunatly they did not have contact with my 8 babys. Who are not up to date on vaccines. They will be as soon as this ice storm we are having in the northwest passes. I am panicking on how to get the cats to the vet for a hydration treatment today. Even with 4wd and chains its really risky. Plus my sinus infection. My miserable aching sinuses.

For anyone who has never experienced distemper here is a mini lesson. It mimics other diseases. Any time a cat is lethargic, vomiting, diarrhea, it should be checked for distemper. It is usually accompanied by a fever which drops below normal right before death. They will refuse to eat/drink. My rescues did not have a fever and showed no signs of being ill. They went lethargic and died. The only other thing that stuck out was the third eyelid that was always covering the eye. Distemper is hard to diagnosis. Blood tests showing low leukocytes can be an indication. There is also a test, I think its called a fecal elisa that can be fairly helpful. Otherwise a biopsy of an affected organ is definate. Distemper attacks rapidly multiplying cells like the gi tract and bone marrow, hence the reduction of lymphocytes. Long post, but I had never experienced this before.

Thats all for now, wish me the best getting to the vet today through the ice storm, and the best with my sinuses. Hopefully I can keep these guys alive. Hopefully I can make my credit card payment heh heh.

I'm so sorry you lost two of your kitties. That's never easy. You're doing a great job of taking care of these little guys. I hope they all pull through and make it.
