We tried to introduce a new cat and he seems to be very aggressive towards the other cats. He is a neutered male but he doesn't act like it. We have a 1 year old spayed female, he spayed mom at 2.5 years and another neutered male about 5 years old. We are positive about the age of the new cat but I would guess he is about 1-2 years as he is still very playful. He has been here about a week now and is very friendly and lovable towards us but it seems he wants to rule the house. If we put him in his carrier in the room with the other cats he doesn't act aggresive at all but once he gets out the fur flys, litterally. We're worried we may have to give him back. Any ideas???

Hello. I'm sorry your kitties are not getting along (although, this is pretty normal at first). There are a few web-sites that have some good information about this type of behavior. The first one below talks about the old cat attacking the most recent member cat, but it still can be applied to your situation. I'll add another post about cat aggression. Read this one first and see if it helps you at all.

Okay, here is the other link for cat aggression. It talks about the different types of cat aggression to other cats in the household. It has a lot of helpful information.

I think maybe the way they were introduced might have something to do with it. I know there have been posts on introductions, I don't really know enough to tell you how to do it though.

I would try keeping him in a seperate room for a bit...only allowing him near the other cats in a crate as you are doing for a few minutes each day and also exchaning bedding, toys, ect. between him and the other cats. After about a week of this I would try and introduce him again out of the crate and see how it goes. You might also be interested in getting a Comfort Zone plug-in with Feliway which may help the situation.
It took me about 3wks before the adult female I brought home would tolerate my adult male. Everytime I tried to introduce them she would freak out and seemed like she wanted to kill him..hissing, scratching and trying to bite him...after several short, introductions she did started to calm down a bit and then completely stopped this behavior. Good luck.

Thanks for all the info and help. We tried the crate the other night and all the cats just stayed in the other room away from Billy the new cat. We then tried to put some of the other cats one at a time in the crate to see how he would react to them. He was very curious and wanted to play with the older female but she wanted nothing to do with him, hissing, growling etc, so that didn't go too well. We then tried the younger female cat and Billy walked around the cage stalking her trying to get in the crate after her. His fur was standing up and his tail was all fluffed up. Its a shame because he is the nicest cat in the world to us. We hope we can resolve this.
