Hello, My kitten is 5 months old now, and I got her at 6 weeks old. I was worried this was abit early so she visited the vet straight away, who advised us to put her on kitten formula to boost her diet. She is still having this now. Our problem is a little strange. She is a lovely sociable cat who loves people, and is also very vocal..people tell me this, as I don't know, she's our first The thing is, she keeps sucking us. It's very strange, when we sit down she will come and sit on us, and do that padding thing with her feet, then she will take abit of our clothing in her mouth and suck it. She won't stop till we get up, often our clothing is soaked by then! Is this normal? Why does she do it? Help! IP: Logged |

Yes this is really normal, you usually see it in siamese cats more than any other breed but others do it to. Basically the cat thinks you are her mommy and is doing this because she is suckling at you like she would have done to her mom to get milk, they 'poddle' their feet to get the milk out of the teat. It can be a bit irritating but it is a really high form of affection, you should be really pleased your cat loves you this much! IP: Logged |

Its cute at first, but gets aggrivating quick... When I first rescued Annibelle, she did this non stop, to your fingers, toes, nose, earlobes, anything she could get too...it was cute, but quickly got aggrivating. She was almost a year old and still did this. we finally would pet her and be affectionate, but the moment she began to suck or reach for something, we would put her down. This is kindof like the momma cat weaning the kittens. She grew out of it within 2 weeks. Its sweet that she thinks your her momma, but you really should wean her from it. She may not stop if you don't. IP: Logged |

It's already abit annoying when I'm trying to get ready for work and as soon as I sit down with a coffee she leaps up to suck me. I guess we should start trying to stop her soon then IP: Logged |

Hi, This can be abit of a problem especially if she starts to suckle on something that is made of wool or loose fibres as if these are swallowed you will have a big problem on your hands as it can cause blockages along with causing upper respritory problems. I think its sweet she looks at you as her mom shows how much she trusts and loves you. IP: Logged |

My 4 year old still kneeds and tries to suckle my ear. She used to try to nurse on my fingers, my mouth, my eyes! I have to set her down and move away, but it still hasnt broken her from the ear thing. IP: Logged |

We've decided we will try and wean her off doing this as soon as the Christmas / New Year celebrations are over. She's being pretty crazy at the moment, leaping all over the flat etc, and I would guess it's because of all the upset around the holidays. So it's probably not quite the best time yet. However, as soon as it's all over we'll begin. IP: Logged |

My Sam does the kneading thing, not the sucking. But the kneading thing can be quite irritating...especially when you are trying to sleep. Is that also a sign of affection? He does it to me all the time but will do it to a few other people if they're in the house. IP: Logged |

That is very sweet... My little Majutsu (who is now 14 weeks - we got her at 6 weeks also) likes to get right up on my face and lay across my neck to sleep at night...she sucks on my hair and snuggles right into whatever small space she can find right up there by my face...I have gotten annoyed a few nights and moved her, but she adamantly comes right back...over and over unless I remove her from the room. So I have gotten used to it and just take it as a sign of how much she loves me. I actually really enjoy all that cuddling. If your problem gets really bad - gentle and consistent correction should solve it. Cats are very smart and learn new behaviors quickly. ~shar IP: Logged |

I have a male cat who is approximately 8-9 months old. About 3 months ago he started sucking on my finger. He only does it on occassion though. One night though he curled up in the crook of my knees (I was sleeping on my side) and tried doing this to my calf, it ticked like crazy but his CLAWS hurt like Heck. IP: Logged |

Buy a good pair of clippers and keep them trimmed. They don't hurt as much when they are shorter. IP: Logged |

Now you've stirred up a hornets' nest with that remark about clippers! My husband has been reading a book that says we need to clip her claws, but it looks quite scary to me. I was thinking we should wait and ger the vet / vetinary nurse to demonstrate before we try... IP: Logged |

definatly a good idea, you only "nip" the very sharp tips, not the whole claw.... IP: Logged |
