Hi All, I live on the Gold Coast in Queensland Australia - the last few days it's been around 35 degrees (freakin hot) esspecially for my indoor cat who is covered in black fur - does anyone have any good ideas as to how to keep her cool during the day - I'm always working and I have to close majority of the windows. Please help!! ... By the way ... Merry Xmas Everyone!!! IP: Logged |

Hello. You can start by closing all the curtains/blinds in your house, before you leave the house or before the temperature begins to get hot. Also, if you have any ceiling fans you can leave those turned on. You probably already do this, but make sure your kitty has fresh cool water available at all times. IP: Logged |

35 degrees doesn't sound very hot to me. Even if that is in celsius. I lived in Texas where it gets 120 degrees farenheit (sp?). I'm guessing that you don't have air conditioning. I moved to Wyoming and I don't have air conditioning here. This summer it got pretty hot a couple of days. All of my cats were fine except for my long haired one, so I ended up getting him shaved (he looked really funny, but he was cool). The best way to keep your house cool during the day is to open your windows at night to get it cool. In the morning close the windows and blinds to trap the cool air in. It actually stays cooler with the windows closed (usually). My cats hung out in the basement a lot b/c it was cool down there. IP: Logged |

hi, Im down in Sydney Australia, I have a similar prob. and have been fretting for my cats well being for several years now. I live in a 2 story house and we lease the top floor and other people live below. So it gets unbearably HOT in here. I am getting an a/c installed in the new year and hope that it will make a difference. I have bought a portable a/c before but it struggles in the heat and is only good in small rooms, also, I cant leave it unattended. So while I am at work, the kitties suffer. One of them was pregnant a few years back and she suffered terribly. I had to bath her in cold water several times a day and wash her face with a damp cloth. But that was the worst time, I found most of the cats would either sleep under the bed, or on the tiles in the bathroom. Sometimes I left a fan on , but the cats would never stay in the same room with it, I dont think they liked the noise or the feel of the wind on them. IP: Logged |
