My 18 yr old American Shorthair is now dodwn to about 13 # from almost 18 well-muscled #. He has feline Aids, some liver problems, but no renal failure (yet). Vet thinks he has a Cancer, & that its begnning to eat him up. He still recognizes and purrs to he, but now will barely eat, drinks water tho. Very lethargic of course, and wobbles in hind end when trying to get up (also when walking). I think that we are VERY close to 'the time' but my question is: does the large dilation of his pupils, and liquid matter from his eyes (but no 3rd eye symptom) indicate he's in Major Pain?? If you people tell me YES, then I am TODAY to his vet for euthanasia. Altho I may call her to the house and have him expire here (if I can stand it..my tears and thoughts and memories of this 'big guy' catching squirrels in a walnut tree, and coming to me with my whistle, are just too much. his DAD

I don't know if those signs indicate pain before. I know that when cats are ready to go you can usually tell by their eyes. You might get some help from this post:

Fleafly: Thanks very much for your reply, and yes, that link was much appreciated; I read it and feel that persons' pain and care, obviously. But the big guy's sitting up, carefully, and taking water and some Slurry-food I prepped with a blender and warm water (fancy-feast Tuna and Ocean W.fish). Like someone said, this is no time to hold back on the GOOD STUFF, or his TREAT as he know it; time to get something in his tummy ASAP. I had to hold a bowlful up to his face, and he got the idea even while laying down (on his heating pad, of course!) been giving him double doses (10 mg) per day of Methiziol for hyperactive thyroid, plus an extra eyedropper of Amoxicillin, 2x day. His eyes are still huge and have a watery discharge. I will just keep this Ole man Bandit warm and loved and maybe another hydration treatment under the skin (had 3 already) and hope he passes without pain, gently. Thanks for caring and sharing your information, anybody. B'sDad
