I have a male cat of 3 yrs and have just introduced my partners male kitten 6mnths into my home. They of course are trying to woprk through dominance issues but the kitten has a nasty habit of attacking my cat while hes asleep- as soon as he closes his eyes there the kitten is doing his Ninja impression onto my cats head!!I find it upsetting and have resorted to separating them when I am not there. would anyopne recommend using a water pistol on the kitten when he displays this behaviour- I don't want to make things worse, but I'm suprised the kitten seems to be winning the battle.Any ideas would be appreciated

Thanks

I think the water bottle would be the best idea. Most cats hate water and ive never had it cause any more problems after using one. It shouldnt take the kitten too much time to learn.

I agree with using a water pistol to deter bad behavior. This situation it a bit different though than trying to deter scratching on furniture or getting into plants which is when I would use the squirt gun. I'm assuming your kitten is not doing this viciously but only wants to play. How long have they been together?
I have a 9 month old kitten and 4 other cats. One of my female cats, Wrigley, did not like the kitten from day 1 and has always growled and given her a swat whenever she got near. Now that the kitten is older she does the "Ninja" sneak attack on Wrigley. It's pretty comical because she'll attack and run. Wrigley will still growl and swat at her but it has never escalated into anything more than that. If Wrigley has had too much she will retreat to another room.

You say the kitten seems to be winning the battle.....does your older cat fight back in any way?

In my opinion your kitten is just doing what kittens do :-) As long as it doesn't escalate into anything more than play fighting I wouldn't even separate them..they will work it out eventually. Make sure to give the older cat plenty of one on one with you.

If your other cat is unhappy and the kitten attacks are too much than yes I would use the water pistol. If it's just play and slightly bothersome I would save the pistol for truely bad behavior.

I think the kitten is just being a punk. The older cat either doesn't mind or puts up with it. He will smack or hiss at the kitten if he doesn't like it. Unless the older cat wants the kitten to stop but can't make him I wouldn't interfer.

Your post reminded me of the 13th picture in this album:

I have another one where she was biting his ear.

Great Picture, Thats exactly what the kitten(puffy) does, I've noticed my cat sleeps with one eye open now!!I think he tolerates the kitten but there is a bald patch on puffy's leg where my cat must have lost patience and swiped him one when I wasn't looking , but for the majority of the time my cat suffers in silence and had bite marks around his neck area.Tried the water pistol and 4am this morning when puffy jumped on the bed to attack my sleeping cat yet again , Puffy looked horrified (bless him) won't be doing that again!!
