My tomcat, Harry is 5 1/2 and up until about three weeks ago he was as healty as could be. Running thru the house, jumping adn playing, waking me up at 6:30 to get attention and a snack. He stays indoors all the time. An apparent incident happened and not sure if he was injured but a bar stool fell over and the cat squalled and ran thru the house. No physical damage could be seen but for the next two days he refused to eat. We took him to the vet and he said after running a blood test that his "blood count" was low and appeared he had leukemia similiar to humans. He had his shots and checkup four months prior including the feline shots which he check ok. After fives days at the vet in IVs he came home and has went downhill since. I can't understand the events from perfectly healty to maybe getting struck by a barstool to leukemis in three days. He will use his box and drink water but not eat and had to be fed. Last two days he refuses to eat and I have got everything known for him and every, I mean every one I could find, medication to make his appetite come back and nothing seems to be working. While the vet said there were no injuries if the bar stool hit him.
Tonight while still refusing to eat and I have read hundreds of articles on the internet in groups like this and none of the suggestions are working. When I try to get him to drink from a shringe he jags and coughs and passes out. After several minutes he will sit back up and fall asleep, sometimes rolling over on his side. I have never seen anything indicate he is in any pain, but I know he can't survive without food and water. His breathing seems normal etc.. So now what? I have had him back to the Vet and he advised he checked the blood results with two other vets and while they don't say for sure they thing it is leukemia and said it could hit all of a sudden. While this can be controlled with patience it has no cure. I can live with that as our dog of many years died two months ago after a six day stay at a different vet that said he would be fine. There is no price I will give within what I can to give the best care. On my dog, we did all we could and his vet bills were over $300 while the cat's cost of treatment has passed $1500 and still climbing. I honestly feel if I have him put to sleep not knowing what is really wrong I will live with that, but when I point blanked asked, he said "I don't know but what we (he and two other vets) found was low blood count, meaning leukemia according to him.
If anyone has anything to pass along please do as most replies may be too late anyway. Over the years me and my wife have had many pets and they are gone but not forgotten, this one will too but while both of use retired for medical reasons and has put a toll on us that seems as bad as the cat's conditon, this is about all the animals in this lifetime we can have. I read on posting where people say well it's best he be put down etc.. I may be a rare bird myself but I can't stand to see any living creature be put down if there is a chance. As with many folks that have pets, I am hurting so bad there are no words to explain. My wife will rub Harry and know that there is nothing she can do and he will pass on. We spent all we could and more and will be paying all that back over a long time, but I would spend twice or three times if there is a chance for one more day.
You can't really post the feeling like we have, so I hope at least one person that reads this understands with a pets compassion, if they do this will help us deal with this. Thanks, An I know there is a heaven for pets where he will not have to be like this anymore. This is a very brief of my life with this cat, I hope to make his life history available and post it on my website.

I would get a second opinion. If the second vet shares the diagnosis, let your cat live out the life he has left at home. I will try to help with some problems you mentioned.

Not eating:
-Maybe he will eat some baby food, make sure it doesn't contain onions.
-If he wont eat anything you can give him nutrical or another vitamin paste, it will give him the nutrients he needs and it is much more pleasant than force feeding.

Not drinking:
-I'm not sure is he drinks or not, you said he did but mentioned him gagging on water from a syringe. If he drinks on his own that is great. He may be gagging on the syringe b/c he is getting too much water at once. You have to give a tiny bit at a time.
-The other option for hydration is fluids under the skin. This worked for one of my cats with kidney problems. The vet showed us how and we gave them to her at home.

I am sorry that your cat is sick and I hope he gets better.

He has had every type of baby food I can find, medications for his immune system and last night and today when i tryo give hima shringe or a few drops of water he gags and screams, I tried warm milk and he took very little, not where near what he needs. no food for two days now. His breathing is very raspy and seems to be having a ahrd time trying to swallow anything like if you had a bad sore throat.
I think today is his final day, I can't continue this> My daughter is taking him back to the vet to see why he can't drink etc.. if it is too far gone then he will rest forever.

Thanks for you comment.

He's a beautiful cat. I would definately take him to another vet. It never hurts to get a second opinion. I put a kitten down once and I keep thinking what if the vet was wrong. I wish I had gotten a second opinion for my peace of mind.

Definately try the nutrical. If he wont eat it you can put it on the roof of his mouth a little bit at a time and he will lick it off. It will also make him thirsty so it should help him to drink.

p.s. he is a very cute cat.
