We have two kittens, two brothers actually, and they are both about 7 months old. They have been using the litter box without incident but only recently has the smaller of the two, Beans, started going in two corners of our bathroom near our toilet. He still goes in the litter box occasionally but we always find a nice gift in the washroom too. He does not sleep near his litter but their food is in the same room. Why does he sometimes choose to go outside the box? They are both males, does this mean it is a territorial thing?

I'm having the same problem!! He keeps pooing by my fiance's recliner. I've tried everything, so if you find a solution, please let me know!

As it is male cats we are talking about here, my first thought is territorial marking or 'spraying', but defacating is also another form of marking territory.

Nuetering would be my first suggestion, if your cats are already neutered/desexed then I have a couple more suggestions:

1.clean the spots VERY well but not with any amonia based cleaners such as bleach as this smells very similar to urine. When a cat urinates somewhere inappropriately, they tend to go back to the same place because of the smell.
2. spray the area with FELIWAY http://feliway.com/ which can be purchased from vet clinics and good pet stores.
3. place a kitty litter in the exact spot if practical
4. Always clean the litter tray whenever it has been used.
5. If you have more than one kitty, you should be supplying your cats with 1 litter tray each and one extra. So if you have 2 kitties you need 3 trays. (i have 14 all over my house)
6. have a full health checkup done on your pet to rule out any urinary problems.

good luck !
