My cat had a high fever. She is about 12 years old and has been in the hospital for 2 days. All of her lab tests and blood work came back negative and her temperature went down from 104.7 to 102. However, she did a turn and it went up again today to 105. So they gave her a stronger dose of vaccine and it is coming down a little. The only thing her xray showed was that one of her kidneys is a bit small and oddly shaped...but her kidney tests read good. She has not eaten since Saturday and it is now Tuesday and has a bad tooth that needs to be extracted...This is what they think the fever is from. The dostor said he cannot take the tooth out until she is back to normal and eating. I went to see her today and she did take food from me and her temp. now was down to 103.7 and I just called (this is 2and 1/2 hours after the visit and it is up to 104.7 again . She is a very mommy baby cat and needs and follows me in every step I take. My question is this: Why is her fever back up if her tests are normal and would coming home calm her nerves and make her well again. The doctor said she could have a deeper issue such as cancer or bone marrow problem. But if her tooth is infected, her temperature will never stay down...Am I correct? Help...I need a second opinion. I have missed two days of work and I cannot take the stress of this off my back until she is home again. thank you Wendi

Hello. I'm sorry your kitty is not well. I can answer your question, as I'm in dentistry.
First of all your vet is questionable. He/she should of had your kitty on Amoxicillin as soon as he/she noticed the infected tooth. When animals and people have an infected tooth they will get fevers. It's your bodies way of trying to kill the infection. Anyway, as soon as your kitty was on Amoxicillin for 2-3 days the tooth should have then been extracted (removed).
Of course your cat doesn't feel like eating, because: A) She has an infected sore/tooth. Which makes it painful to eat. B) She is not feeling well, due to the fever.

Your cat does not need to be in the vets office for as long as it has been. How much is that vet charging you for all of this?

Get your kitty on Liquid Amoxicillin right away. Bring her home and have her tooth taken out on Friday.

p.s. To answer your other question, the fever will go down once she's on liquid Amoxicillin after about 24 hours. The reason you don't want to have her tooth taken out right away, is that some of the infection needs to be taken care of with the Amoxicillin. Otherwise when your kitty has a raging infection in her tooth, the vet will not be able to numb her up (infections neutralize dental anesthetic, meaning you don't get numb).

I agree 100%...although I may not be in dentistry or a vet....But, the only way to stop infection is thru an antibotic and liquids....if your kitty is not drinking, she will be dehydrated, which will not help the fever. She needs that liquid amoxicillin NOW....(which I have used MANY times, and I swear by it) With the infected tooth, the fever will never come down. Good luck and keep up posted
