I keep having the same problem with my cat with the diherea. While he has this problem, he really doesn't act too sick. He still plays like normal, purrs all the time, eats fine (very fussy as it is) and has the wet nose (might just sleep ABIT more). He has been getting it on and off now (2 times now) in the last 5 months. The diherea is very mucusy and has a very foul odor and he goes everywhere BUT in his litter box. The wierd thing is, is that is seems to happen everytime I return from a long period time away from him. Is it just a cowincidence?? The first time was in July after I was in Florida for a week. Lasted about 2 weeks after that, then it went away. The 2nd time was when I returned home from Cuba for a week (Dec 13/03). This most recent time I saw some blood in the stool (diherea). I have already spent more then $1100.00 CAN. on him and don't know how much more I can afford. Will this problem he is having now with the blood in the stool go away with time once again like it did before? Or should I bring him in again for another big vet bill? I am renting a 1 bedroom apartment right now and really can't afford this anymore. Can someone please give me some advise on this matter? Please! His name is Shorty and here are some pics of my buddy. http://f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/liquidmc3/album?.dir=/Shorty&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/liquidmc3/

You may want to ask your vet if he could possibly have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I have a cat who began having reoccuring very foul smelling diarrhea and no cause could be found. He acted fine, but kept having the diarrhea on and off till it got progressivly worse.

The vet finally suspected IBS, but the only way to get a definite dianosis is by surgey to get a sample of his intestines. We didn't want to do that so our vet prescribed prednisone just to see. This is what is given for IBS.

The prednisone was like magic. His diarrhea has straightened up. He has an occasional bout of it now and then, but I just increase his medicine for a day, then go back to the prescribed dose.

IT has done wonders for him...and for our house as his poo made the whole house smell when he was having a bad IBS attack.

You may want to explore this possiblity with your vet.

When you are away, who takes care of your cat and what do they feed him?
Your cat is very cute by the way. Thanks for posting your pics.

Try feeding him a light cat formula or a hairball formula. I suggest Authority brand hairball formula, my cat has IBS and it works great for her. If he does have IBS that food should help. You can buy it at Petsmart.

Also it could be stress induced. Does he have these problems when you are home, or only when you are gone?

Thanks for all the help everyone! It is good to know a forum like this is around to give people any helpful insight! Thanks!
I will definitly look into the IBS if I see no improvement in the next couple of days. Is that prednisone a pill form of medication? And do you think it will effect him in a bad sense if I give him this prednisone and he doesn't have IBS?
The only time he gets this is when I return home or starts shortly BEFORE I eturnhome from say a week away from him. Once I return home he has it for about a week to a week and a half. While I am away, I have had my sister watch him and my girlfriend (both love him) and they feed him exactly as I would. Both of them have never complained about any diherea while I've been gone. But he has gone outside of this litter box in the later of the week in both times I have been gone, now that I recall. That could just mean his litter box wasn't clean..no?
I feed him 1/4 can of Performatrin Maintenance wet a day. And he always has a mixture of Nutrience Supreme & Royal Canin Adult 32 dry food avaiable to him. I have to mix the dry food because the Royal Canin is the ONLY dry food he seems to eat. I would feed him only the Royal Canin BUT the vet told me that the Royal Canin was probably some of the cause to the Urinairy track infection he had about 8 months ago. Which who knows if that is true because I have heard that the Royal Canin is very healthy food. When he has this diherea problem i try to lay off the canned wet food abit, until it gets a little better.
As of today, he is still urinating in his litter box but no stool yet. I did find some stool in a closet when I got home from work today. Semi dry by the time I got to it but still diherea. I didn't see any blood in it though! I will keep my fingers crossed. He is only 4 years old and i hate to see him like this. He is still active and aware but also sleeping good.

Yes, prednisone is a pill and you get it form the vet...it's very inexpensive. If he does not have IBS and shows no improvement with it, it will not hurt him. My kitty has been taking it now for 2 years. I give it to him in treats. Occasionally my other cat will get the treat if he doesn't eat it. I asked the vet and she told me it would not hurt my other cat if she occasionally got the pill.

Prednisone is a steroid and has been used for many years in both animals and humans. It's given to humans who have digestive problems also. My brother has Crohns disease and also takes pred.

The main side effect is weight gain. But, I haven't had any problems with that either. I feed my cat food formulas for older/over weight cats and it seems to help keep his weight in check.

I hope this helps.

Prednisone is a steroid and does have side effects. I wouldn't use it unless you have to. Apparently cats tolerate steroids pretty well, but they still have side effects. My kitty has IBS and she has been fine with just the dietary change, but every cat is different.

I would definately try a different food and see if it is diet related. Although from the pattern you describe it sounds like it might be b/c he is stressed when you leave.
