How old is the cat? My cats were'nt too happy when I first brought home Natalie as a pup. It took some time for them to adjust but everyone gets along great now. I would keep the puppy on a leash or in a crate while introducing it to the cat for the first few times.

You may find some helpful tips on this site: http://www.cyberpet.com/cybercat/articles/behavior/addpet3.htm

Time is very important as well.

They will not be friends right away and the puppies energy is probably way to much for the cat.

The cat will eventully get use to the puppy but it will take a few months.

My cat and dog have the same problem. My dog will then try to play, and the cat defends herself, so the dog gets rougher thinking she is now playing! We are having a really hard time with this, especially since my dog doesn't understand that the cat just doesn't like him! We have two kittens on the street who just LOVE my dog, and my dog loves them, so he doesn't understand why my cat doesn't love him!
