Hi I have a few questions. On the 30th of November I was at a store and there was this little kitten walking around the parking lot. I picked him up and brought him home cause I was worried he would get hit. He turned out to be sick. From the symptoms I figure it's an upper respitory infection. But I honestly have no money to take him to the vet at the moment. Recently though my resident cat has started having a WEAK meow. He can meow, but it's very weak and sometimes it doesn't come out at all. I want to know if this is anything very serious or if it's just maybe he's getting sick from the kitten. Thanks for any help.

Hello. I realize you don't have any money to take the cats to the vet. I'm not sure what the weak meowing in your resident cat means (if anything). However, the kitten you brought home, does need to see a vet. His condition will not clear up on it's own. Not to mention he may have other serious medical issues.

If you want to keep the kitten, I would suggest you go with your kitten (not call) your local animal shelter and tell them of your money situation and ask if there is anyway they would be willing to treat the kitten in exchange for you volunteering at the shelter until you have paid off his medical treatment. Beg if you have to! Or call a local vet and see if they would be willing to let you make small monthly payments to treat your kitten.

If you don't want to keep the kitten call your local shelter or animal rescue groups (like some at Petsmart) and see if they have room for one more kitten.

Let us know what you decided to do. Also check the site here as many others know the names of rescue groups in NY and other practical advice for you.

Check to see if there is a Humane Society of the United States in your area. They have low cost vet clinics and will definately work with you.

Here is the link to a site in NY that may be able to help you. They also do free neutering/spaying and there is a map on how to get there as well as phone numbers. (click on the link below)
http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=nyc

I'll try to find the one fleafly mentioned as well.

I couldn't find the NY phone number, so you will have to call this number to get the NY number.

Thanks for the replies everyone I'll deffinately work on something. I read it might go away on it's own if it was a cold but I don't think it is. So I'll try out a few of your suggestions

Upper respiratory infections are very common, and they go away on their own. the problem is the complications it may cause. They may cause the kitten to develop pneumonia or another type of infection. If he isn't better after a little while, he needs to see a vet. Also, if he stops eating or drinking he needs to see a vet.
