I currently have a spare room with my computer in it and all of my cat's stuff such as litter boxes, food, scratching posts ect. and Im thinking of moving the computer to another room and converting it into just a "cat play room". Im going to get a utility table so that all the food dishes and water fit on it and Im going to put the litter boxes underneath it to save space. I'd like to get 2 new floor to ceiling scratching posts and attempt to build my own large cat condo for the room. Currently I have tunnels, scratching posts, smaller 1 and 2 tower condos and a floor to ceiling scratcing post. I think Im going to buy a window perch too.
Any ideas on other things I can add to the room to make it an awesome, fun play room for them?

I don't plan on confining them to this room...just want to have a room full of fun for them to enjoy.

Dangly things, My cat can't get enough of them, if you put them high enough you can probably see them perform acrobatic feats

Good idea, thanks. I bet I could attatch some dangly things to the ceiling. I just need to be able to secure them well so the cats can't pull them down while playing. I wonder if plant hooks would work?
I once saw a fake bird that attatches to the ceiling and spins around in a circle. Since Bean is fascinated with the ceiling fan I think he would find it pretty interesting.

My neighbor bought me this book called The Cats House. The guy who wrote the book did some awesome stuff to his house. He built walkways around the ceiling and cut holes so they could go from room to room on the walkways. He had a pole they could climb or a ramp they could use to get up on the walkway. I have thought about doing something like this. My cats play in the rafters in the basement, so I guess it is kind of like that.

oooh wall shelves. I have wall shelves staggered around in their room and it seems to be a crowd pleaser.
There is also some sort of window perch/bird feeder Where they can sit at the window and watch the birds but the birds cant see them. I believe I saw it in the dr. fosters and smith catalog. If you do a search for them you should be able to find their website.
I bet your kitties are just going to love their room!!!

Fleafly: I beleive I saw pictures of "The Cats House" in a cat fancy magazine one time and also on TV. Its amazing what those people did to their home and it sure looks like alot of fun for the cats. LOL.

MandysMom: Great idea! Maybe I will put a few shelves going up the wall too.
I think I saw that window perch thing in the Dr.FosterSmith catalog....its the one that looks like a box with windows and kinda sits outside the window, right?

Instead of just giving them food bowls I would think about getting some of those balls that you put treats in and when they roll the ball around the food falls out.
I found climbing nets, like rope made into squares is great for them to climb and maybe an old tree stump for them to scratch their claws on, should save your furniture too.

Hi Nern. I guess I'll put my two cents in too. I like the book Fleafly has (The Cats House). You mentioned you saw it a couple of times, but here is the link if you want to see a couple of pictures to inspire you for your new cat room: http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0836221834/ref=sib_dp_pt/103-5977947-5051006#reader-link

Also, to expand on Caitlyn's idea about the tree stump....any chance you could get an actual real indoor tree for them to climb around on? It doesn't have to be huge or difficult to get into your place. There are a number of trees that do well indoors. Or I suppose you could make your own fake tree out of wood and carpet.

Also, this may sound rather simple, but my cat loves boxes! I'll bring home boxes from work and he can't get enough of it. Sometimes, I'll cut little windows in it too. He'll climb in and out and play for quite a while. He even likes to nap in them.

You could even cut and tape several boxes together (single story) and put shelf paper on the outside of it to make it look less like a box. And then cut the new windows and doors out.

I definately think you should put in shelves. I have these shelf/cubby hole things in the basement. Eve likes to sit in the top one and smack whoever gets in the one below her. It's so funny.

Chessmind: Thanks for posting that site
I like the idea of getting or making a small tree for them to climb in. I bet they would love that!

Fleafly: Im definately going to think about putting some shelves up. I bet my cats will get plenty of exercise in this room. LOL.

emmit: Good idea. Cheive sure is facinated with my fake x mas tree. I can't seem to keep him out of it.

I won't actually be starting this project until Feb - March. I need to get a new, smaller computer desk first and I think Im going to re-paint the room and get a new carpet first. Its great to have lots of ideas on how to get it started though. I think Im going to have alot of fun putting it together. When Im finished I'll have to take pictures to show all of you.

Chessmind: I forgot to comment on the boxes..mine love boxes too! I'll have to put some boxes and a laundry basket or two in the room as well. They jump in my laundry baskets every chance they get. LOL.
