We have a 2 year old house cat and noticed one of her "big back toes" on her front paw has been dry for a few weeks. Her toe is black and almost looks white with cracks now. She fell yesterday jumping and I noticed when I picked her she was bleeding a little. Husband looks at it today and it looks a little swollen. Anyone know why it is so dry or what we can do about it. Am considering taking her to the vet and have them loo it.

Its unusual for a housecats pads to be dry. My cat go outside and their pads are pretty tough, like hard skin, but they don't crack and get sore.

Is the pad swollen at all? I think the cracking possibly indicates their might be an infection or possibly something akin to eczema going on there. I think a trip to the vet is a good idea especially if it is bleeding. If it stops bleeding and seems to be healing try an antiseptic cream gently rubbed in, not too much and make sure there is none left on the pad, or maybe a gentle moisturiser would be of benefit but personally I would go with the vet option. She may have just scraped it on a piece of furniture but its better to be safe than sorry.

I was actually surprised that my indoor cats pads look pretty beat up. I thought they would stay in a lot better shape. I think you should keep an eye on it. If it is causing her pain take her in, otherwise it could be normal. You can put a little vasoline on it for some moisture. Maybe it just got dry from a weather change or something.
