Hello! We adopted a precious 9 week old kitten from the Humane Society Friday night. It is so adorable and affectionate and wasnt nearly as nervous as I expected it to be when we brought it home. Everything seemed fine. He didnt eat that much friday night, but I figured he wouldnt til he felt more comfortable.

We have a tremendoulsy large kitchen and I put the food bowl at one end and the litter box at the other. He used the litter box friday night and then yesterday morning. I decided to move the litter box to a room that is attached to the kitchen to give him more privacy since we are in and out of the kitchen all day long. Mistake! LOL Because, saturday afternoon he pooped on the livingroom floor. LOL No problem. I knew it was because I moved the box and I promptly moved it back. Flash forward to today. I woke up on the couch with my 8 year old daughter (we both fell asleep while I was reading her a story and my husband thought we were so cute he left us there ) and was shocked at what I saw. On the white quilt covering my daughter and I was a HUGE, wet, warm and yellow stain and it was most definitely cat urine. It went thru the quilt and was all over my daughter's pants and even made it to the couch cushion. I got my daughter up, and we washed her pants and quilt and I cleaned up the cushion and sprayed enzyme remover/odor remover on it.

That in and of itself doesnt bother me. My question is WHY did the kitten do that? Is this a sign of things to come? After cleaning up, I put the kitty in the box and he pooped right away. Could it be possible the kitten couldnt find the litter box in the dark? Can they see in the dark? Sorry for my ignorance. I grew up with cats and have always had them and have never seen a cat not go in a litter box. Should I take it to the vet for a possible urinary tract infection? Or would other symptoms be visible? He is now eating a great deal, very playful and loving. Sorry this is so long, but I am concerned this is a sign of trouble ahead. Btw, I am using clumping litter, clean it twice a day, and do not have a lid on the litter box. Thanks! Ann

Hi. Congrats on adopting your new kitten. I too adopted two 11 week old kittens (brother & sister) from my local SPCA back in August.

I would keep an eye on your kitty to make sure he is eating and drinking enough. First off, it is normal for the kitten to go to the bathroom anywhere, and it will have accidents. The 1st three weeks I brought my kittens home, they went to the bathroom EVERYWHERE except in the litter box. They are adjusting to their new home. I basically kept putting the kittens in their litter box every 2 hours, and 'scratched' their paws in the litter, so they knew that is where they are supposed to go. Within 3 weeks there were no more accidents! I would also go and get a decent carpet cleaner and some frebreeze (sounds like you have this covered already). If the kittens smell the odor, they will likely go there again. As far as I know kittens/cats can see in the dark.

I only live in a one bedroom apartment, and I have 2 litter boxes, one in my bedroom and one in the corner of my living room. That way they have extremley easy access to both. My suggestion to you would be to go out and get another (cheap) litter box. That way the kitty doesnt 'forget' where the boxes are at.

Most importantly, since you just adopted your new kitty, it needs to go to the vet asap for a checkup. The vet will probally give it a de-wormer and it's vaccanations. Good luck and keep us posted!!
