I have a spayed long haried female cat that has an infrequent urination problem that is coming more frequent. It started at first by peeing on bathmats, doormats or kitchen mats. I thought it was the damp smell that attracted her to the mats. Now she started to pee on the bed. She peed twice on my wife's side and yesterday closer to my side. We had her tested for possible urinary tract infection, but the results were negative. The Vet believes it may be a behavior problem and may recommend medicine but I am not happy with the idea of a drugged up cat. My wife read that it may be a sign of affection, but I can't see that being the case. Please note, we have a small kitten, but she has peed prior to having him in the house.

The litter boxes have been clean enough for her to go the bathroom. In fact she went prior to lasts night incident. Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't have much advice, but here it is:

Cats don't like to eat where they eliminate. Maybe you can put the cat's food in the areas that she's been peeing. That may teach her not to go to the bathroom there.

Also, make sure you get rid of the odor wherever the cat has gone. You can buy a neutralizer at a pet store. They seem to work well.

(Is the litterbox in a spot where the cat doesn't feel threatened or scared because of noise or something else? I hear some cats don't like their litter in noisy areas because it frightens them. It's just another thought.)

As for the behavior problem itself... that's tough. I hope you can pinpoint the problem and have a healthy, happy kitty.

Actually I thought of the food idea and we haven't tried it yet. As for a neutralizer, we have Nature's Miracle which seems to work very well.

We also took the extra step of placing a plastic mattress cover under the sheets and mattress pad.

The vet said to try Buspirone as a behavior modification approach. Hopefully it will work.

I am having the same problem with my cats, and for years. they first started peeing on clothes if dropped on the floor, so we leave nothing lying around, then it shifted to the sofa. then the bed, with me in it! like right next to me. my vet ruled out all the health problems, so thats not it. we did the same thing, bought plastic matress covers and all that, but still they go (i have 3, and caught 2 in the act)I was banging my brain trying to figure out why in the bed, i thought the smell of us (sex) was causing them to cover it w/their smell, so we would spray the bed down with linen sprays, but still not helping long term. Now we leave our bedroom door closed, but they just go on the sofa again, or the dog bed. I have done just about everything they tell you to. change litter type, smell, etc. nope still do it, then moved litter to a very private place w/ easy access, nope still go. our problem with it is it isn't like they do it everyday. its like 1 month or 2months. so its hard. I dont like the idea of drugging my cats either. my cats are keeped indoors, I might just let them out.maybe they need the dirt.if not they have to go, its been 5years this has been going on.my husband is freaking out cause im 9 month pregnant, and he said he will kill them if they pee on the babies bed! I think we will find them a good home. I am very sad! I hope you can change their behavior soon, dont let it go on for years. I think maybe if I confined them when we are not home and/or sleeping. I dont know, im so stressed out about the whole thing! good luck with your cat! again I hope u figure it out, so u dont have to get rid of the animal. dorrox

We have to keep our kitty in the washroom at night .. she can't stand not having attention, so when we go to bed, she poos/pees all over the place.
