Hello, it's me again with another question.

My cat, Grace, started scratching my couch not too long ago. I do not want to declaw her, so I covered areas that she likes to scratch in clear double sided tape. That helps, but can come detached relatively easily. I puchased "Soft Paws" on-line for her, which work but she can pull them off of her right paw within a week or so.

For those of you who aren't familiar with Soft Paws, they are basically rubber tips that you glue on over their nails when you cut them. They can still scratch everything, but it causes no harm. Does anyone have tips on how to keep the caps on?

Thanks Again!

Hon, are you using enough glue in the nails? Newton did not bother them when I tried them about two years ago. My boyfriend's cat, well we put them on her and she would bend her paw in and bite on them and try to pull them off. She was never able to succeed. Also make sure you leave enough nail to give the caps something to hang on to. But I am sure you knew this already. You could probably put something bad tasting on the nails, nothing that would hurt her, but something she would not want in her mouth.

NTC,

Thank you for your quick response...I try to fill the nails about two-thirds full of glue. I've only been using the glue that comes with the tips, do you think super glue would hurt? I will try to put more glue in, though. It's funny, she only picks at one paw.

Also, did you ever have to cut the tips off once they grew out? So far, Grace's have been just falling off on their own when they are too long...

Thanks Again!

Yes, actually on Newton's "thumb" nail we did have to cut the cap off. It stayed on almost too well and his nail with the cap was getting to the point where it was putting pressure on the pad. So we cut the soft paw off of his nail. The others just came off on their own. As far as the super glue, I think that the glue that they use is actually superglue. It is the same ingredients. I don't know if you could get any stronger than that. Are the nail caps the correct size for your cat?

I initally bought the medium size, which I quickly learned were too large. I have small ones on her that seem to fit, I think I just need to load her with more glue! I was just worried that the glue would end up making a mess.

I do think that these caps are a great invention and a great alternative to declawing.

Eed, don't worry about the glue. Those soft paws would not sell well it if it was going to hurt the cat. She is just biting on the nail, not the glue. You must have a small cat. Newton takes the medium size, almost large. He is a bigger cat. Just try more glue on the nail that she bites and let us know how that works.

Thanks for the advice NTC, I will use more glue and see how that goes!

If I can only get her to eat now, I'll be in good shape!

I don't want to have my cat declawed either, sounds like a good alternative.

It really is a great alternative, very easy to put on and generally last about a month or so. You should buy them on-line rather than at your vet's office. You can go to softpaws.com. Even though the colored ones look a little silly, I recommend them over the clear ones. It was harder for me to pin down my cat and inventory her nails with the clear ones!

They are pretty interesting. It is just a matter of being able to get them on your cat. Some will only to be able to do a few nails at a time because the cat won't sit so long. Newton always just laid back on my lap and let me put them on him. I was lucky. Some people have to let a vet do them. I was contemplating getting them again for him because we moved into a new place in August and I just bought a new couch. He doesn't bother it though so far. He uses the post. If he makes like he might start using the couch, I will look into them again. I like them. Newton wears the blue color. Lol!
