I have a dog and a kitten. They love sharing a huge waterbowl. Is this alright? I know it sounds like a stupid question but I just wanted to know if it's safe or not.

yes it is ok water given to a cat is prefered to giving them milk as this can cause problems for the cat the only type of milk that should be ever given to a cat is proper milk made for cats. water is heathier its sweet that your cat and dog will share not many dogs will allow a cat anywhere near there bowls

I agree that this is great that your animals share. Our vet recommended a water dish that runs constantly (the sound of running water makes cats want to drink more). And because they drink more, they will less problems with urinary tract infections.

I have a Deluxe Fresh Flow water purifyer, and my kittens do drink alot of water from it. They love to drink the fresh water as it's flowing down the fountain. Even before I bought that, they were big water drinkers, but even more so after I bought the fountain. I love it, because it keeps their water clean and cold for them.

That's so cute, my cat would NEVER drink from the same bowl as my dogs, he's a snobby little thing. However, I don't blame him - both dogs slobber all over the place.

Thanks everyone! I know it was a stupid question but im new to the cat thing and i wasnt sure! Chloe will not drink out of her cat bowl she only drinks out of the dog bowl and usually they drink at the same time! The kitten and dog get along pretty well but i often get worried that the dog might get too excited and hurt the kitten. Do you know when i should intervene and separate them. There is never any growling but i get worried that he wont be able to defend himself against the dog.

hi never underestimate your kitty he will defend himself if needs be, if there is no growling or agression towards your kitty then sounds like there wont be any problems but the second you dog turns to biting the cat then you need to intervine and tell him no, but if they are drinkg from the same bowl and get along well sounds like they have bonded and you will soon find that they will start to follow each other around all the time and they will sometimes sleep together

Please, do be careful even if they appear to be getting along. NEVER leave them alone together unattended. A dog can very easily kill a full-grown cat, let alone a kitten, without meaning to. If the dog picks the cat up and shakes it (in play), that can break the cat's neck.

I have been told that when you see two animals sleeping together, you don't have to worry about them hurting each other anymore. I don't know if this holds with cats and dogs, though, since the dog could hurt or kill the cat without meaning to.

Also, I read a story of a dog who killed the cat he had lived happily with for years. They were outside and the cat ran by and the dog chased it down and killed it. It was just the dog's prey drive activated by the running cat, but a tragedy just the same.

I don't say this to scare you, but just to let you know that you should supervise them.

As far as the water goes - I have one cat that will drink from the dog's bowl. The other cat would never even think of doing that. In fact, the puppy drank from the cat's bowl before we put it up on the countertop, and the one cat wouldn't touch it for days even though I cleaned it out. It is one of those fountain bowls, which is the only thing the one cat will drink from. Before that, he would only drink from a running tap in the kitchen sink - highly inconvenient, especially when we went on vacation!

Each cat is different. I had a cat that would only drink out of the toilet bowl. She wouldn't touch her water bowl unless she saw you fill it up and you put an ice cube in it. Then she would drink a little and not touch it again until she saw you repeat the same steps. Some of my cats like to drink out of the dog dish, and others don't. As long as they are drinking water thats what matters.
