My 1 yr. old cat has a cold. I have been unemployed going on 6 months, needless to say I am short on funds. Can I give my cat and even my pup of 8 months any over the counter medication?

Any info. would help!

If it's just a little cold, it might just clear up on its own. I would call the vet and ask if there's anything you can give them. Watch them closely and if they get worse or have dangerous signs (listlessness, not eating for more than a couple days, not going to the bathroom, not drinking water, pain, etc) then you'll need to bite the bullet and bring them in to the vet. Are there any vet schools near you? Sometimes that is a lower cost alternative.

I suggest getting a job .. animals need care. And not just when they are sick.

Hi

May I suggest taking a look at the post "What antibiotics can I give my cat" Or something to that effect. There have been a slew of answers there. But also, talk to your vet as Jamiya mentioned before giving a cat anything in case it is poisonous. Cat's colds usually clear up on their own after a week or two. However, keep an eye out for their breathing (i.e. a raspy noise, esp. during purring) which may indicate fluid/mucous in the lungs which could indicate something more serious.

A message for Illflower: I'm sure Andreadk knows that animals need care and that a job will provide such financial means to do so. However without knowing what kind of situation he/she is in, I don't think you are in any position to be giving out job advice. In case you haen't noticed, the economic situation isn't exactly booming and plenty of people are out activly looking for work without success. May I suggest to you that you keep your advice to what this message board is meant for - cats.

I want to say thanks for all the info. My Lilac Point Siamese, Jazper, is doing fine. Idid take him to the vet. and got him some meds.

A message to the stupid idiot named Illflower. As far as your comment on getting a job, mind your own business. The economy has been hit hard all around. Looking for a job is something I have been doing for the last 6 months. As I can see from that ridiculous website you have, how uneducated you are. Maybe you should go back to school and educate yourself and get a better job, a legal job. From the looks of your website, one can only guess what you do.
