4 year old male cat Bela is licking the hair off on his inner thighs and near his private. He does not have fleas. The vet says it is skin allergies and has given him cortizone shots that actually temporarily releaved the licking but obviously wore off. Is there a topical ointment that I can use? Lotion? As it gets hotter, he licks more. He is all white and his bright pink skin gets so dry. Please help!

I had a cat that had flea allergies and he would bite himself until he had scabs all over. We got him a cortizone shot and it helped him completely!

If he's aggressivly licking that spot, I wouldn't recommend an ointment because he'd probably lick that off and make him sick. But if you find something that would work, try getting him a cone shaped collar to keep him from licking the spot until it heals.

If the cortizone shot worked, I would just get him another one. Less torture for him, and easier for you!!!

P.S-did the vet say why he only licked around his privates? Do you think he could have an infection "down there"?

my mom's cat has the same condition though he usually gets sores around his neck and belly. I have forgotten what the medical name is but it is known as 'scabby cat disease' they are not sure what causes it though flea allergy can be one cause.
In the past we have given the cat arnica once a day in his food and bathed the affected areas with salt water. It does not always do the trick but saves him from getting quite so many steroid shots.

Oh yeah, it wasn't a cortizone shot they gave him, it was a steroid shot...That's right....

Anyways, not like it really matters now. He got hit by a car not to far back. He was just getting better too *sniff*

Omega 3 fatty acids are supposed to be helpful for allergy sufferers. Maybe you can ask your vet about giving the cat a supplement?

BTW, I think it has to be balanced to Omega 6 fatty acids to work...but it may be worth looking into.

My dog licks and licks b/c he has seasonal allergies. He takes hydroxyzine. I don't know if it is okay for cats to take or not. Bendadryl also helps him. I would ask your vet if cats can take hydroxyzine or benadryl and try those if they can. They clear up my dogs allergies (especially hydroxyzine). If your cat can take hydroxyzine try getting it on the internet, its probably cheaper than at the vets.
