Hi everyone,
My sweetheart, and my very best friend seems to have come down with something. My Isis, has always been regular when it come to her litterbox time. However yesterday she went to her box and started crying very loud. I went to her and saw that she was straining to poop. She managed to push a small hard one out, but that was it. After that, she kept runnning to the box and straining again! This went on for the rest of the morning, with no results. finally she made her way to her window bed and laid down.
Now it has been almost 24 hours,no activity in her box, and she is just not acting like her self. Isis has just turned 5, and she is only an indoor cat, and has been all her life. My question, Is there anything I can try to help her with the constipation? That seems to be the only thing wrong. She has been just fine until yesterday. Any advice?
I just HATE! seeing her like this!! She is the best little girl...

When my kitten was constipated, I gave her some hairball remedy to help things slip along...I just followed the directions and it helped! Come to think of it, she could be constipated from a hairball too. Is she longhaired?
Anyways, I would try the hairball rememdy stuff. Most stuff is pretty palatable and they'll lick it right up, if not, you can try mixing it with a treat!

Hope this helps!

P.S-almost every kind of medicine or suppliment humans take can be lethal for cats. I wouldn't recommend giving your cat anything that's meant for humans without asking your vet first!

Hi

My cat also was constipated and stopped eating, drinking etc. The vet took an x-ray and you could see the blockage - I never knew a cats intestines could be so long! Anyways, they gave me a laxative to start with - TonicLax - and I used a syringe to feed it to her 4 times a day. If nothing passed in 2 days, they would then consider other alternatives. Fortunanlty, she managed a small bowel movement after a day.

But I certainly wouldn't wait. They can get dehydrated very quickly and constipation is quite painful. Good luck!

Constipation can be cause by a blocked intestine which is very serious, and needs a vets attention. Or it could be more benign.

For constipation, I have also used to hairball treatments, such as petromalt. They lubricate everything and make it pass easier. You can also try some canned pumpkin. It is a natural laxative. It didn't work so well with my kitty, but I have heard others say it works. Give your cat a few teaspoons at a time and repeat until she goes. I have also used a little milk in the past, its not that good for cats, but when its critical that they go I think the trade off is worth it. Milk tends to give cats diarrhea, and could help.

You can also call your vet for some advice. Ask you vet when you need to bring her in if she hasn't gone. If she doesn't go in 1-2days it could be a blocked intestine and she would need to be seen by the vet.
